This objective of this study was to characterize the floristic, structural, and ecological groups and to estimate the arboreal volume and biomass of a cerradão site in Palmas, Tocantins, Brazil. A forest inventory was conducted on 10.15 ha of the study area. Plots of 400-m 2 were used for systematic sampling. All standing trees (dead or alive) with a breast-height diameter (DHB) greater than 5 cm were identified and measured. Floristic diversity and horizontal structure were assessed using the Shannon and importance value indices, respectively. Forest vertical structure was classified into three stratata and the tree species were categorized into ecological groups. Ninety tree volumes were rigorously cubed and weighed. Fresh-and dry biomass were sampled and estimated. Mathematical models were applied and adjusted to estimate tree volume and biomass. It was observed that the species Myrcia splendens and Emmotum nitens and the families Fabaceae and Chrysobalanaceae were dominant in our study site. The pioneer (613 individuals ha -1 ) and climax (530 individuals ha -1 ) tree species group predominated. The floristic diversity index was estimated as 3.35 nats ind -1. The vertical structure analysis indicated fewer individuals in the superior stratum (13%) compared to the medium (63%) and inferior (24%) stratum. The Schumacher and Hall model showed better results with regard to estimated forest production. Forest volume and biomass estimates were 126.71 m³ ha -1 and 61.67 Mg ha -1 , respectively. The studied cerradão area had high floristic diversity and climax species predominated. Since this cerradão is in close proximity to the Amazon biome, its volume and biomass stocks were higher than those estimated for other cerradão and forest formations within the Cerrado biome. ResumoO objetivo do estudo foi caracterizar a florística, a estrutura, o grupo ecológico e estimar os estoques de volume e biomassa arbórea em uma área de 10, 15 hectares de cerradão, localizado no município de Palmas, Estado do Tocantins, utilizando a amostragem sistemática com parcelas de 400 m². Foram amostradas e identificadas todas as árvores vivas e mortas em pé, com diâmetro a 1,3 metros do solo ≥ 5 cm. A diversidade florística foi avaliada pelo o índice Shannon e a estrutura horizontal pelo o Índice de Valor de Importância. Quanto a estrutura vertical, a floresta foi classificada em três estratos.

-The objective of this study was to characterize the floristic composition, vegetation structure and ecological group of tree species in a cerradão forest (Cerrado biome) of Palmas, Tocantins State, Brazil. A forest inventory was performed in an area of 10.15 hectares, using systematic sampling with plots of 400 m², in which all standing trees, alive and dead, that had diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥ 5 cm were sampled and identified. A linear plateau regression model (LPR) was used for sample sufficiency analysis. The Shannon index (H') was used for assess the floristic diversity, and the Importance Value Index (IVI) for assess the horizontal structure. The forest was classified in three strata according to vertical structure analysis. The LPR showed that the sampling size was adequate. The predominate species in the area were Myrcia splendens, Emmotum nitens and Qualea parviflora, and species from the families Fabaceae and Chrysobalanaceae. The pioneer (613 individuals ha -1 ) and climax (530 individuals ha -1 ) species were the predominating groups. Regarding the richness index, the number of climax (57 species) and pioneer (25 species) species stood out. The alpha floristic diversity was 3.35 nats individuals -1 and the Pielou equability value J = 0.76. The diametric distribution showed a negative and balanced exponential pattern. Regarding the vertical stratification, the smallest amount of individuals was in the upper stratum (13%) and the highest in the mid stratum (63%) and in the lower stratum (24%). The use of floristic composition tools with horizontal and vertical structure analysis was effective for understand the tree community, which may be considered structured and diverse, thus able to restructure possible disturbances when preserved.Keywords: Floristic diversity. Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a eficácia da aplicação de modelos de análise de regressão e redes neurais artificiais (RNAs) na predição do volume de madeira e da biomassa acima do solo, da vegetação arbórea em área de cerradão. Volume de madeira e biomassa foram estimados com equações alométricas desenvolvidas para a área de estudo. Os índices de vegetação, como variáveis preditoras, foram estimados a partir de imagens do sensor LISS-III, e a área basal foi determinada por medições na floresta. A precisão das equações foi verificada pela correlação entre os valores estimados e observados (r), erro-padrão da estimativa (Syx) e gráfico residual. As equações de regressão para o volume de madeira total e do fuste (0,96 e 0,97 para r, e 11,92 e 9,72% para Syx, respectivamente) e para a biomassa (0,91 e 0,92 para r, e 22,73 e 16,80% para Syx, respectivamente) apresentaram bons ajustes. As redes neurais também apresentaram bom ajuste com o volume de madeira (0,99 e 0,99 para r, e 4,93 e 4,83% para Syx) e a biomassa (0,97 e 0,98 r, e 8,92 e 7,96% para Syx, respectivamente). A área basal e os índices de vegetação foram eficazes na estimativa do volume de madeira e biomassa para o cerradão. Os valores reais de volume de madeira e biomassa não diferiram estatisticamente dos valores estimados pelos modelos de regressão e redes neurais (χ² ns ); contudo, as RNAs são mais acuradas.Termos para indexação: índice de vegetação, inventário florestal, produção, regressão, sensoriamento remoto. Artificial neural networks for modeling wood volume and aboveground biomass of tall Cerrado using satellite dataAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the effectiveness of regression models and artificial neural networks (ANNs) in predicting wood volume and aboveground biomass of arboreal vegetation in area of tall Cerrado (a forest, savanna-like vegetation). Wood volume and biomass were estimated with allometric equations developed for the studied area. The vegetation indices, as predictor variables, were estimated from LISS-III sensor imagery, and the basal area was determined from field measurements. Equation precision was verified by the correlation between estimated and observed values (r), standard error of estimate (Syx), and by the residual plot. The regression equations for total wood volume and bole volume (0.96 and 0.97 for r, and 11.92 and 9.72% for Syx, respectively), as well as for aboveground biomass (0.91 and 0.92 for r, and 22.73 and 16.80% for Syx, respectively) showed good adjustments. The neural networks also showed good adjustments for both wood volume (0.99 and 0,99 for r, and 4.93 and 4.83% for Syx) and biomass (0.97 and 0.98 for r, and 8.92 and 7.96% for Syx, respectively). Basal area and vegetation indices were effective in estimating wood volume and biomass for the tall cerrado vegetation. Measured wood volume and aboveground biomass did not differ statistically from the predicted values by both the regression models and neural networks (χ² ns ); however, the ANNs are more accurate.
