Eucalyptus ESTs involved in mechanisms against plant pathogens and environmental stresses

Abstract: RESUMOEucalypt plantation has high economical importance in Brazil; however, it has been attacked by various pathogens under different environmental stress conditions. Disease resistance and survival under unfavorable environmental conditions have revealed that the eucalypt has developed highly efficient defense systems. t o o t h e r a l r e a d y k n o w n m o l e c u l e s , s u c h a s p l a n t -s i g n a l i n g molecules, phytoalexins, lignin biosynthesis pathways, PR-proteins an d p u tati v e g en es… Show more

“…The phenylpropanoid metabolic pathway produces various secondary metabolites, which possess resilient antioxidant activity under abiotic stress conditions. Plant phenolic compounds, especially flavonoids, are very powerful compounds in plants that can provide resistance to a variety of biotic and abiotic stresses [17][18][19][20]. Flavonoids belong to the phenolic group and consist of two aromatic rings, which are jointed by three carbons.…”

“…It also stimulates indole acetic acid and ethylene mediated signals in the plants (Ditengou and Lapeyrie, 2000). The aqueous extract of Eucalyptus initiates pathogenesis related proteins (PR-proteins) in the plants which help in defence against pathogens (Rosa et al, 2010).…”

“…In 2010, Rosa et al used the Eucalyptus expressed sequence tags (ESTs) Genome Project (FORESTs) transcriptome data to identify Eucalyptus ESTs that were either induced or not induced by various stress agents. A number of known defence-associated genes were identified and various mechanisms of defence against abiotic and biotic factors were described (Rosa et al 2010). Much of the data produced from these studies is publicly available and has been used to describe various aspects of Eucalyptus biology.…”

“…Much of the data produced from these studies is publicly available and has been used to describe various aspects of Eucalyptus biology. In addition, a number of studies have used expression-based data from Suppressive Subtractive Hybridisation (SSH) studies, EST libraries and microarrays to infer defence responses in Eucalyptus (Duplessis et al 2005;Feng et al 2012;Rosa et al 2010). The Eucalyptus Genome Network (EUCAGEN, web.up.ac.za/eucagen/) is a consortium of researchers aimed at the development of Eucalyptus genomic resources and provides links to various useful sites and tools for this field.…”
