Abstract: T his stu dy a imed to eva lu a te the precision a nd a ccu ra cy of evaluators using diagrammatic scale to estimate defoliation caused by diseases in soybean. The scale had six levels of severity of defoliation (5, 15, 45, 65, 85 and 100%). The images used for evaluation were obta ined in plots a tta ck ed by Asia n soybea n ru st ( Ph a k o p so ra pachyrhizi), presenting different levels of defoliation. “…Defoliation was evaluated at 14 DAC, when leaf fall in the control plots reached 80 %. The methodology consisted of assigning a visual score to the damage caused by Asian soybean rust from 0 % to 100 % for each plot, using an adapted scale of Hirano et al (2010).…”

“…Moreover, at the end of the soybean growing season, canopy defoliation caused by SBR was determined. The defoliation assessments were realized when soybean plants reached the R7 phenological stage (beginning of maturation); therefore, visual evaluations were made following the defoliation severity scale proposed by Hirano et al (2010). Based on SBR severity data collected in Piracicaba and Ponta Grossa, the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) was calculated.…”
