Efficient management of whitefly‐borne diseases remains a challenge due to the lack of a comprehensive understanding of their epidemiology, particularly of the diseases tomato golden mosaic and tomato yellowing. Here, by monitoring 16 plots in four commercial fields, the temporal and spatial distribution of these two diseases were studied in tomato fields in Brazil. In the experimental plots these diseases were caused by tomato severe rugose virus (ToSRV) and tomato chlorosis virus (ToCV), respectively. The incidence of each virus was similar in the plots within a field but varied greatly among fields. Plants with symptoms for both diseases were randomly distributed in three of four spatial analyses. The curves representing the progress of both diseases were similar and contained small fluctuations, indicating that the spread of both viruses was similar under field conditions. In transmission experiments of ToSRV and ToCV by Bemisia tabaci MEAM1 (former biotype B), these viruses had a similar transmission rate in single or mixed infections. It was then shown that primary and secondary spread of ToCV were not efficiently controlled by insecticide applications. Finally, in a typical monomolecular model of disease progress, simulation of the primary dissemination of ToSRV and ToCV showed that infected plants were predominantly randomly distributed. It is concluded that, although the manner of vector transmission differs between ToSRV (persistent) and ToCV (semipersistent), the main dispersal mechanisms are most probably similar for these two diseases: primary spread is the predominant mechanism, and epidemics of these diseases have been caused by several influxes of viruliferous whiteflies.

Over the last two decades, begomovirus diseases have increased in importance in Brazilian tomato crops. The major management strategy in Brazil is the application of insecticides to control the whitefly vector, but this is often unsuccessful. The objective of this work was to study the spatial and temporal progression of the disease in two processing tomato production areas in Central Brazil. A total of 24 plots (225 plants each) in six fields were evaluated weekly by visual inspection for plants with begomovirus symptoms. The predominant begomovirus in tomato plants with symptoms was Tomato severe rugose virus, and it was also detected in weeds and other crop plants. No correlation between incidence of begomovirus disease and whitefly population was found. The disease progression was rapid, with a slightly aggregated distribution of plants with symptoms. No relevant differences were observed in the temporal and spatial analyses, although an important difference was detected between plots located at the centre (PC) and the edge (PE) of the fields. In the temporal analysis, the begomovirus incidence and area under disease progress curve values were lower in PC than in PE. In the spatial analysis, plants with begomovirus symptoms were more aggregated in PC than in PE. These results suggest that the distribution of plants with symptoms in PC and PE could be a result of three dissemination mechanisms: one random (primary) and two aggregated, a real secondary spread, and a false secondary spread. The implications of these differences on disease management are discussed.

Temporal progress of a begomovirus disease in tomato fields and the abundance of its whitefly vector, Bemisia tabaci biotype B, were evaluated during three consecutive tomato plantings in the municipality of Sumaré, state of São Paulo, Brazil, in 2006 and 2007. The incidence of symptomatic plants and the number of adult whiteflies were weekly monitored on experimental plots randomly chosen in tomato commercial fields. Tomato severe rugose virus (ToSRV) was identified as the causal agent of the disease, and its relationships with other Brazilian begomoviruses was confirmed by partial and complete nucleotide sequencing of the viral genome. The disease temporal progress was analysed by fitting different models to disease incidence. The monomolecular model showed the best fit, which is consistent with a predominant role of primary spread in the epidemiology of ToSRV. A higher number of adult whiteflies were observed at the borders of the plots, also suggesting primary spread of ToSRV from external sources of inoculum, which might be represented by weeds and volunteer tomato‐infected plants. In Brazil, since 2004, there is a legislative measure that mandates, for some regions of processing tomato plantings, a 2‐month crop‐free period during the year. Based on our results, we suggest the extension of this measure to all tomato‐producing regions, including fresh market tomato. We also suggest that growers emphasize the elimination of old plants from harvested fields that can serve as virus reservoirs several weeks prior to new plantings and weeds nearby the fields to limit the primary spread of ToSRV.
