The citrus leprosis pathosystem

Abstract: Citrus leprosis is considered the main viral disease for the Brazilian citrus production, particularly for the State of São Paulo, due to the high costs spent for the chemical control of its vector, the tenuipalpid mite Brevipalpus phoenicis. In addition, its global importance has significantly increased in the last years, with the dissemination of the virus to new countries in South and Central America. In Brazil, despite its economical importance and occurrence for more than seven decades, the most significa… Show more

“…Entre os fatores que limitam a produtividade da citricultura brasileira e aumentam seus custos de produção destacam-se as doenças, principalmente as viroses, como a leprose-dos-citros (Bastianel et al, 2006). Causada pelo Citrus leprosis virus (CiLV), é uma doença endêmica nas regiões produtoras do Estado de São Paulo e reduz a produção e o período de vida útil das plantas afetadas (Rodrigues, 2000).…”

“…In the 1930's, it was found in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Brazil. Since then, it has been reported from other South American countries (Bolivia, Colombia and Venezuela) as well as from Central American countries (Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico) Bastianel et al, 2006). The disease is of concern for citrus growers in the Caribbean region, where the virus is absent, and in the US, where it has not been found since the 1960's (Childers et al, 2003c).…”

“…The situation becomes more complex because Brevipalpus mites have already been found in most of the tropical and subtropical regions of the world, infesting many plant species. Additionally, economically important BTV, such as CiLV-C and CoRSV are able to infect other plant species including some ornamentals (Bastianel et al, 2006;Novelli et al, 2008), under either natural or experimental conditions. Thus these viruses may accidentally be introduced into disease-free regions by infected ornamentals.…”

“…Sweet orange varieties [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck] are highly susceptible to the virus, and plants may be completely destroyed if left untreated (Müller et al, 2005). In Brazil, around US$ 100 million are spent annually for the chemical control of its vector, the false spider mite Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) (Acari: Tenuipalpidae) (Bastianel et al, 2006). The disease symptoms are characterized by chlorotic or necrotic local lesions on the leaves, stems and fruit at the mites' feeding areas.…”
