Determination of hydroquinone in a square wave voltammetry procedure using a graphite-polyurethane composite electrode

Abstract: In order to a better characterization of a graphite-polyurethane composite intended to be used as a voltammetric sensor, the performance in a square wave voltammetric procedure was investigated. Using hydroquinone (HQ) as a probe, the electrode showed to be useful in square wave voltammetry with limit of detection of 0.28 µmol L-1, with recoveries between 99.1 and 101.5%. The results of the proposed method agreed with HPLC ones within 95% confidence level.

“…29 The purpose of this work is to investigate the voltammetric behavior and the possibility of TC determination using a 60% (graphite, m/m) bare graphite-polyurethane composite (GPU) electrode in environmental water samples. This composite was proposed 30 and showed to be sensitive and useful in differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), 31 square wave voltammetry (SWV) 32 and as an amperometric detector in flow injection analysis 33 of antihypertensives.…”

“…Composite electrodes have been prepared from graphite and polyurethane (PU) derived from castor oil, and have been used to determine several organic [4][5][6] and inorganic analytes [7], including copper in ethanolic fuels [8] and spirits [7]. Our idea in such papers was to demonstrate the usefulness of the composite in different shapes and applications, once it is prepared from a liquid bicomponent polymer, that allows such possibilities.…”

“…In previous work, we used a graphite-polyurethane composite electrode in a conventional rod format [4][5][6], and we recently proposed a screen-printed device in which graphite-polyurethane was the basis of an ink used to prepare the working and auxiliary electrodes, as well as the electrical contacts of the reference electrode [35][36][37]. Different to the earlier work, in the present study the ink was modified with 2-benzothiazole-2-thiol organofunctionalized SBA-15 silica prior to the curing process.…”

“…While chromatography methods is a good option for the determination of hydroquinone, the procedure are time-consuming and requires complicated pretreatment. Due to the high sensitivity, rapid analysis and simple pretreatment [6], electrochemical method has been widely used in the determination of hydroquinone [5,7,8]. However, some of the previous methods often involves modification of electrode that require complicated procedure and the use of conventional electrode require large volume of analyte.…”
