Determination of Copper, Iron, Nickel and Zinc in fuel kerosene by FAAS after adsorption and pre-concentration on 2-aminothiazole-modified silica gel

Abstract: Silica gel chemically modified with 2-Aminotiazole groups, abbreviated as SiAT, was used for preconcentration of copper, zinc, nickel and iron from kerosene, normally used as a engine fuel for airplanes. Surface characteristics and surface area of the silica gel were obtained before and after chemical modification using FT-IR, Kjeldhal and surface area analysis (B.E.T.). The retention and recovery of the analyte elements were studied by applying batch and column techniques. The experimental parameters, such as… Show more

“…2-Aminothiazole (AT) is a heterocyclic amine combining the chemical structures of aniline, pyrrole and thiophene. Owing to the existence of sulfur- and nitrogen-rich subgroups, AT and its derivatives demonstrated excellent adsorption properties to heavy metal ions [ 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ]. For example, AT-modified silica gels were able to adsorb and preconcentrate Ni(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), Zn(II) and Pb(II) [ 7 ]; also, AT-functionalized polyacrylonitrile and polystyrene exhibited an excellent selectivity for adsorption of Hg(II) and Au(III) ions in aqueous solution [ 8 ].…”

“…It was reported that 2AT and its derivatives demonstrated excellent anticorrosive properties [4] and adsorptive functionalities to heavy metal ions due to the sulfur (S)-and nitrogen (N)-rich subgroups [5,6]. 2AT-modified silica gel and TiO 2 particles were reported to be able to remove heavy metal ions including Ni(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), and Pb(II) from fuel kerosene [7], fuel ethanol [8], and aqueous solutions [9][10][11], respectively. Recently, it was reported that 2AT-functionalized polyacrylonitrile resin enabled separation and preconcentration of Hg(II) from multicomponent solutions containing Ni(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), and Pb(II) [12].…”

“…Additionally, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirms the presence of TPM bound to the silica surface (Figure 1b). From the silica a broad and almost featureless band is visible between 2500 and 3800 cm −1 , corresponding to the stretching vibrations of the surface silanols Si-OH perturbed by hydrogen, bonding either intramolecularly or with adsorbed water [30]. For the TPM-modified silica particles, additionally two small bands are visible between 2800 and 3000 cm −1 from the stretching vibration of C-H bonds.…”
