Corrosion of steel reinforced concrete in the tropical coastal atmosphere of Havana City, Cuba

Abstract: Recebido em 29/3/12; aceito em 21/8/12; publicado na web em 1/2/2013The influence of chloride deposition rate on concrete using an atmospheric corrosion approach is rarely studied in the literature. Seven exposure sites were selected in Havana City, Cuba, for exposure of reinforced concrete samples. Two significantly different atmospheric corrosivity levels with respect to corrosion of steel reinforced concrete were observed after two years of exposure depending on atmospheric chloride deposition and w/c ratio… Show more

“…Corrosivity category determined for most common construction metallic materials and reinforced concrete is very high (C5). ClDR higher than 1000 mg m −2 d −1 (dry plate devices) has been reported in the coastal tropical climate of Havana City, without shielding conditions …”

“…A correlation was made between reported atmospheric pollutants for Havana City and their level of concentration on the air for the last decade (Castañeda et al, 2012;Placeres et al, 2004;Varona et al, 2011). From these results, the classification of the atmosphere and time of wetness (TOW) were established (ISO, 2012).…”

“…The housing fund is over 50 years of age and heritage buildings is almost five centuries old since the first foundations, however there is still no efficient mechanism to estimate the direct and indirect losses related to corrosion damage and deterioration of materials (Castañeda & Rodriguez, 2014). Some studies have been carried out on the relationship between the climatic parameters and the concentration levels of atmospheric pollutants in the Capital (Castañeda et al, 2012;F. Corvo et al, 2009;Oroza, 2016) but deeper knowledge about the effect of air pollution on the preservation of historic buildings in Havana still lacking.…”

“…It is a consequence of high (C4), very high (C5) and extreme (CX) corrosivity categories of the atmosphere at coastal locations without shielding conditions (Castañeda et al, 2013(Castañeda et al, , 2014. High corrosivity categories of the atmosphere were expected due to high levels of chloride deposition rate (Cl -DR).…”
