Rotenoids from Tephrosia toxicaria with larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti, the main vector of dengue fever

Abstract: Recebido em 29/6/11; aceito em 14/1/12; publicado na web em 15/5/12In the search for new larvicides from plants, we have investigated the potential activity of the rotenoids deguelin (1), 12a-hydroxy-α-toxicarol (2) and tephrosin (3), isolated from the bioactive ethanol extract of roots of Tephrosia toxicaria Pers., against Aedes aegypti, the main vector of dengue. The absolute configuration of these compounds was determined by circular dichroism (CD) spectra. The LC 50 values of the compounds evaluated justif… Show more

“…So far, rotenoids have been found only in plants, mainly species from the genera Derris and Tephrosia (Leguminosae). 33,34 Therefore, this is the rst report of a fungus producing of rotenoids. On the other hand, there is no report of rotenoids in M. urundeuva, the host plant of the fungus studied.…”

“…In addition to 1 and 2 , the other two know compounds 3 and 4 were also isolated from D. eriocarpa . By comparison of the physical, MS, and NMR data with those of references , the structures of the two known compounds were identified as tephrosin ( 3 ) and 12a‐hydroxy‐ α ‐toxicarol ( 4 ), respectively.…”

“…As a result, two new flavonoids, 1 and 2 , together with two known flavonoids, 3 and 4 ( Fig. ) , were isolated from the AcOEt extract of D . eriocarpa .…”

“…Previous chemical studies dealing with this plant isolated rotenoids as the main compounds present in the organic extracts and some of them showed cytotoxic and antiinflammatory activities (11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16) . The rotenoids occurring in this genus are unusual since they do not present the E-ring (6,(17)(18)(19)(20) . In this way, this work describes the isolation and the antimicrobial activities of rotenoids isolated from C. fairchildiana roots and seeds extracts, and a correlation between their structures and observed activity was also checked.…”
