Determination of aluminum in food samples after preconcentration as aluminon complex on microcrystalline naphthalene by spectrophotometry

Abstract: Recebido em 17/4/10; aceito em 10/10/10; publicado na web em 26/1/11 A sensitive preconcentration procedure for spectrophotometeric determination of aluminum was developed. Aluminum as aluminon complex is adsorbed on microcrystalline naphthalene. The naphthalene containing the complex is dissolved in 3 mL of acetone and its absorbance is measured at 544 nm. The effect of various factors on the preconcentration of aluminum was investigated. The calibration graph was linear in the range of 1-60 µg L -1 . The lim… Show more

“…The negative or positive interference of co-existing ions in AAS analysis is a main problem for researchers (15)(16)(17)(18)(19). Heavy metals are generally found at trace levels, particularly at less than the detection limits of AAS which is another problem for these types of determinations (20)(21)(22)(23)(24). Enrichment and separation combinations, such as solid phase extraction, cloud point extraction, co-precipitation, solvent extraction, etc., are widely used to solve these limitations of AAS detection (25)(26)(27).…”

“…Naphthalene is used in preconcentration procedures because of its ability to extract or form a complex with organic species (Fathi et al, 2011). This sorbent makes it possible to achieve high enrichment factors and is soluble in many solvents, which can facilitate the detection process.…”
