a b s t r a c tThe components of seven matrices in the analysis of 11 pesticides by GC-ECD were analysed. The matrix effect was calculated based on the changing of chromatographic response of the analyte in the presence of co-extractives of the matrices in the organic phase obtained by solid-liquid and liquid-liquid extraction with partition at low temperature (ESL-PBT and ELL-PBT), in relation to the response of it in the pure solvent. It was used the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) in evaluating the results obtained for the percentages of the matrix effect. The tomato, grape and pineapple matrices caused greater matrix effect and were grouped. The other matrices such as apple, water and potato caused small matrix effect. For most pesticides the soil matrix caused negative matrix effect. The influence of pH of the samples on the matrix effect was also evaluated showing not to have a direct effect on the phenomenon.

This paper investigates a strategy as a quality control parameter, using standard surrogate and determination of a relation factor for determination of parathion-methyl, chlorpyriphos and cypermethrin pesticides in environmental aqueous matrices with distinct characteristics (river water, estuarine, seawater and weir water), using the technique of solid phase microextraction gas chromatography with flame ionization detector (SPME-GC-FID). Pesticides were very susceptible to matrix effects promoted by environmental samples. The salinity and the organic matter seem to have been the main sources of interference in the method. For chlorpyriphos, in middle and high levels, the values of relation factor (R f ) for estuarines, seawater and weir matrices were statistically similar. For cypermethrin, the statistical equality occurred in estuarine matrices in medium and high levels of concentration. That indicates proportional behavior between the pesticide and the surrogate recovery, suggesting that a single value of R f can be used as correction factor recovery for any of these matrices.

O efeito de matriz em análises por cromatografia gasosa é atribuído à presença de coextrativos na fase orgânica obtidos em processo de extração. Este trabalho relata o estudo da quantificação do aumento da resposta cromatográfica para quatro pesticidas em extratos orgânicos de tomate obtidos por extração sólido-líquido com purificação em baixa temperatura (ESL-PBT). Os pesticidas clorpirifós, l-cialotrina, cipermetrina e deltametrina apresentaram aumento da resposta cromatográfica depois da saturação do sistema cromatográfico com múltiplas injeções de extrato orgânico de tomate. Verificou-se também que quanto maior o tempo de retenção, maior o efeito de matriz, e o padrão interno reduz o efeito deste, mas não o elimina. O efeito de matriz medido pelas curvas analíticas (em acetonitrila e extrato da matriz) foi 27% para o clorpirifós, 46% para l-cialotrina, 96% para cipermetrina e 180% para deltametrina.The matrix effect in gas chromatographic analysis is attributed to the presence of coextractives in organic phase obtained in the extraction process. This work reports the quantification study of increased chromatographic response of four pesticides in organic extracts of tomato extracted by solid-liquid extraction with low temperature purification (SLE-LTP). The pesticides chlorpyrifos, l-cyhalothrin, cypermethrin and deltamethrin showed an increased chromatographic response after the saturation of the chromatographic system with multiple injections of organic extracts of tomato. It was also found that the greater the retention time, the greater the matrix effect, and that the internal standard reduces the matrix effect but does not eliminate it. The matrix effect measured by the analytical curves (in acetonitrile and matrix extract) was 27% for chlorpyrifos, 46% for l-cyhalothrin, 96% for cypermethrin and 180% for deltamethrin.
