Determination of Cd and Pb in fuel ethanol by filter furnace electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry

Abstract: A method was developed for quantification of Cd and Pb in ethanol fuel by filter furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. Filter furnace was used to eliminate the need for chemical modification, to stabilize volatile analytes and to allow the application of short pyrolysis step. The determinations in samples were carried out against calibration solutions prepared in ethanol. Recovery tests were made in seven commercial ethanol fuel samples with values between 90 and 120%. Limits of detection were 0.1 µg L-1 for… Show more

“…Although ICP based techniques have been the most widely used to carry out the determination of metals and metalloids in ethanol fuel, alternative methods have been explored such as ETAAS, 175,[200][201][202][203][204][205]176,179,185,[206][207][208][209]183,210,211 ionic chromatography (IC) 178 and microwave plasma optical emission spectrometry (MIP-OES). 177 Several modiers have been used to carry out the determination of metals in bioethanol and ethanol fuel by ETAAS.…”

“…In this case, the obtained recoveries were between 94 and 96.7%. Saint'Pierre et al 205 reported a method to determine Cd and Pb in fuel ethanol by ETAAS. The standards were prepared in ethanol and the recoveries ranged from 90 to 120%.…”

“…Several analytical techniques have been proposed to determine metals in ethanol fuel [10], such as electrothermal atomic absorption spectroscopy (ETAAS), [5,11,12,13,14,15,16] microwave inductively plasma optical emission spectrometry (MIP-OES) [6] or voltammetry [17,18,19,20,21]. Flame absortion atomic spectroscopy (FAAS) in turn has been widely employed for this purpose [4,22,23,24,25,26].…”

“…172 Cadmium and Pb were also determined in ethanol fuel by GFAAS, exploiting a filter furnace to avoid using chemical modifiers, stabilize the volatile analytes and to short the pyrolysis step. 173 Detection limits were 0.1 mg L -1 Cd and 0.3 mg L -1 Pb, with recoveries in the 90 to 120% range.…”
