Evaluation of seasonal changes in chemical composition and antibacterial activity of Elyonurus muticus (sprengel) O. Kuntze (Gramineae)

Abstract: Aerial parts of Elyonurus muticus were collected in the four seasons of the year in the Brazilian Pantanal and subjected to extractrion with cold ethanol and to hydrodistillation. Sesquiterpenoids (E)-caryophyllene, bicyclogermacrene, spathulenol and caryophyllene oxide were the main components identified in the essential oils and their concentrations varied according to the plant collection period. The essential oils and the ethanolic crude extracts were active against Bacillus cereus MIP 96016, Pseudomonas a… Show more

“…Currently, Cymbopogon citratus is one of the natural sources of citral; however, its production per hectare is low in Brazil 4 . Elionurus muticus is an aromatic grass that is characterized by the presence of citral as major compound of its essential oil 5 . E. muticus belongs to the Poaceae family and is known as lemongrass.…”

“…In addition Lim et al demonstrated the inhibition of airways inflammation by the root of Angelica decurciva (Lim et al, 2014). It was shown that seasonal variation has an impact on the composition of plant extract (Jerkovic et al, 2001; Hess et al, 2007). Regarding this aspect Togolese TP mostly collect their plant material all season but we noticed that the collection during morning time and rainy season were preferred compared to midday, evening and dry season.…”

“…Utilizaram-se 0,5 mL dos extratos clorofórmicos e 1 mL dos extratos etanólicos para as análises. Hess et al (2007) observaram que extratos produzidos a partir de partes de aéreas de Elyonurus miticus coletadas na primavera foram mais efetivos sobre bactérias gram-positivas avaliadas.…”
