Show more

“…With the dissemination of imaging diagnosis devices as well as their increasingly widespread utilization, the occurrence of incidentally found hepatic nodules has become more and more frequent in patients submitted to imaging studies or screening for tumors (48)(49)(50)(51) . The technological development of these apparatuses has allowed the detection of increasingly smaller lesions, difficulting their characterization that later might be affected by the findings of pseudo-hepatic lesions at contrast-en-hanced CT and MRI (52,53) .…”

“…Typically, the conventional exam is repeated after 3 to 6 months, and no other imaging exams are done. Some authors recommend a CT or MR in all cases of nodules greater than 1 mm (13,14) . Use of contrast in US has brought new perspectives to the method, and this approach is gradually becoming adopted in hepatology for the differential diagnosis of hepatic nodules, detection of primary carcinomas, transplant assessment, among others (12) .…”

“…The diagnostic criteria for a typical hemangioma on conventional US were: solitary, circumscribed, hyperechoic nodule, with both dimensions less than 4 cm (14) . The 37 patients first underwent US with contrast followed by MR in a double-blind study design.…”

“…Cavernous hemangioma is the most common benign hepatic tumor (4,5) , with greater prevalence in women. In general, they are single tumors, smaller than 5 cm, and cause no symptoms (6) .…”

“…At US these lesions present a nonspecific appearance, with large dimensions, heterogeneous echotexture and poorly defined limits (6) . Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the most sensitive method for detection of acute abdominal bleeding (5) .…”
