Pineapple plants of the cultivar Turiaçu are important for the fruit production sector in the state of Maranhão (MA), Brazil, because of their fruit quality and local social and economic value. The objective of the present work was to evaluate characteristics of pineapple plants of the cultivar Turiaçu at vegetative and propagative stages in two places, using two fertilization sources. The study was conducted in the municipalities of Turiaçu and São Luís, MA, using mineral and organic fertilizations. The plants were evaluated for number of leaves and leaf dry weight; stem diameter, length, and dry weight; width, length, and fresh and dry weights of the D leaf; and number of suckers (plantlets). Plants grown in Turiaçu under mineral fertilization had higher number of leaves (up to 162.5% higher) and higher number of suckers (up to 233.3% higher) than those grown in São Luís under organic fertilization. The results of the study indicate that the more favorable climate conditions in the municipality of Turiaçu were decisive for the success of the cultivar, and the organic fertilizer used was not adequate.

Pineapple is one of the most important fruits, with large production in tropical and subtropical regions and great appreciation by consumers all over the world. The pineapple plant has many specific morphological, anatomical and physiological characteristics that determine crucial aspects of pineapple crop management, such as flower induction, water use and vegetative methods of propagation. The use of sexual reproduction of pineapple is restricted to breeding purposes carried out by research institutes looking for new hybrids with improved agronomic characteristics. Seeds are only produced if cross pollination among varieties occurs. Commercially pineapple has to be propagated by vegetative material, an asexual reproduction, without new combinations of genes. Some types of propagules are naturally produced by the plants and called conventional planting material. Its availability and quality depend on many factors, especially cultivar and environment. Management techniques of this material have been continuously developed and will be addressed. In addition to the conventional planting material, which in many situations is not sufficient to assure expansion or at least maintenance of the cultivated area, several other methods of vegetative propagation of pineapple have been studied and made available along the last decades and will also be discussed, involving techniques of stem sectioning, apical growing point gouging and chemical treatment for transformation of flowers into plantlets. Stem sectioning has been especially interesting, as it is mostly done using plant residues available at low cost, and is a rather simple method suited for multiplication and production of disease-free planting material in nurseries. Gouging and chemical treatment are less practiced, but can be applied in ratoon crops, thereby avoiding the loss of the first cycle fruit. Chemical treatment usually results in rather small plantlets, that must be further grown in nurseries before planting them in the field. And finally micropropagation will also be focused, as in vitro production of plantlets is a very important method of multiplication of new pineapple varieties, but this method yet has not been transformed into a common commercial way of pineapple propagation due to the final high cost and to the still high risks of incidence of somaclonal variations among the plantlets produced.

RESUMOAs Indicações Geográficas (IGs) instituem-se como uma forma de proteção dos produtos ou serviços que se tornaram conhecidos ao longo do tempo por serem oriundos de determinada região ou localidade. Tal proteção, por sua vez, no que se refere à esfera jurídica, decorre do fato das Indicações Geográficas se constituírem um instrumento da Propriedade Industrial. O presente trabalho tem por finalidade verificar o potencial de Indicações Geográficas no Estado do Maranhão. A metodologia utilizada na investigação foi de natureza qualitativa descritiva, onde se procurou primar pela qualidade das informações. O embasamento teórico deste trabalho foi amparado por produções científicas que abordam o tema das Indicações Geográficas na perspectiva da Propriedade Industrial evidenciando a importância das mesmas para o processo de desenvolvimento local e regional. De tal modo, pode-se afirmar que em alguns dos municípios maranhenses, foram identificados grandes potenciais de IGs, tendo como destaque o Abacaxi Turiaçu.Palavras chave: Indicações Geográficas. ABSTRACTThe Geographical Indications (GIs) are instituted as a form of protection for products or services that have become known over time since they are from a particular region or locality. Such protection, in turn, in relation to the legal sphere, it stems from the fact that Geographical Indications constitute an instrument of industrial property. The present study aims to investigate the potential of Geographical Indications in the state of Maranhão. The methodology used in the research had descriptive qualitative nature, where we tried to prioritize the quality of the information. The theoretical basis of this work was supported by scientific publications that address the issue of Geographical Indications in the perspective of Industrial Property highlighting their importance to the process of local and regional development. So it can be stated that in Maranhão, in some municipalities, large potential of GIs were identified as having emphasis to Turiaçu Pineapple.
