-The influence of different irrigation levels, both with and without mulching, was evaluated for the growth variables of productivity, production components and water use efficiency, in a castor bean crop (Ricinus Comunnis) cv. BRS Energia, in a Fluvic Neossol of the semiarid in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco. The experimental design used was completely randomised in a factorial of 4 (irrigation levels) × 2 (with and without mulch), with four replications. The irrigation levels were based on the evapotranspiration of the crop (ETc), with L1 = 60% ETc, L2 = 80% ETc, L3 = 100% ETc and L4 = 120% ETc. All growth variables showed significant differences to the mulch at 120 days after germination. The number of racemes per plant, percentage of bark, and water use efficiency responded significantly to the presence of mulch on the ground, while length of racemes, fruit yield and berry yield responded significantly to the isolated effects of the irrigation levels and ground cover. Levels L3 and L4 improved the performance of the crop, with an average productivity of over 2,360 kg berries ha RESUMO -Avaliou-se a influência de diferentes lâminas de irrigação na presença e ausência de cobertura morta nas variáveis de crescimento, produtividade, componentes de produção e eficiência do uso da água, da cultura mamoneira (Ricinus Comunnis) cultivar BRS Energia em Neossolo Flúvico no semiárido pernambucano. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial 4 (lâminas de irrigação) × 2 (com e sem cobertura morta) com quatro repetições. As lâminas de irrigação basearam-se na evapotranspiração de cultura (ETc), sendo L1 = 60% ETc; L2 = 80% ETc; L3 = 100% ETc e L4 = 120% ETc. Todas as variáveis de crescimento apresentaram diferença significativa à cobertura morta aos 120 dias após a germinação. O número de racemos por planta, o percentual de casca e a eficiência no uso da água responderam significativamente à presença de cobertura morta no solo; enquanto o comprimento de racemos, a produtividade de frutos e produtividade de bagas responderam significativamente aos efeitos isolados das lâminas e da cobertura do solo. As lâminas L3 e L4 foram as que permitiram melhor desempenho da cultura, com produtividade média acima de 2.360 kg ha -1 de bagas.Palavras-chave: Irrigação. Crescimento. Componentes de produção.

Castor has emerged as an oilseed species capable of meeting the demand of the Brazilian market.Thus, there is a need for studies to evaluate the different growing conditions that this species can be cultivated in order to subsidize their production. The study aimed to evaluate the influence of different growing conditions on agronomic performance of seven castor bean cultivars grown in Savanna-Pantanal ecotone region. The trial was conducted at Universidade Estadual de Mato Grosso do Sul, Aquidauana Campus. Treatments consisted of seven castor bean cultivars (BRS Energia, IAC-2028, IAC-Guarani, BRS Nordestina, BRS Paraguaçu, IAC-80 and IAC-226) and three growing conditions (with weed control and without topdress nitrogen; with topdress nitrogen at 80 kg ha -1 and with weed control; without weed control and absence of topdress nitrogen) in two agricultural years (2011 and 2012), arranged in randomized block design with three replications in factorial arrangement (7 x 3 x 2). The following variables were evaluated: plant height, stem diameter, number of bunches, number of fruits and fruit yield. The cultivars BRS Energia, IAC 2028, IAC Guarani and BRS Paraguaçu obtained greater fruit yield. Topdress nitrogen and weed control provided to cultivars the highest stem diameter, number of bunches, number of fruits and fruit yield.

-The aim of this work was to evaluate the weed management with herbicides applied in pre and postemergence on castor crop. The treatments were constituted by management systems using herbicides in pre (PRE) and postemergence (POS): 1) S-metolachlor at 576 g ha -1 (PRE 1) and chlorimuron-methyl at 15 g ha -1 (POS 1); 2) PRE 1 + clomazone at 650 g ha -1 (PRE 2) and POS 1; 3) PRE 1, POS 1 and halosulfuron-methyl at 112.5 g ha -1 (POS 2); 4) PRE 1, POS 1 and ethoxysulfuron at 60 g ha -1 (POS 3); 5) PRE 1, POS 1 and ethoxysulfuron at 120 g ha -1 (POS 4); 6) PRE 1 + PRE 2, POS 1 and POS 2; 7) PRE 1 + PRE 2, POS 1 and POS 3; 8) PRE 1 + PRE 2, POS 1 and POS 4; 9) hand-hoeing control and 10) non-weeded control. The experimental design was randomized blocks with four replications. The association of the herbicides in PRE combined to sequence applications of chlorimuron-ethyl and halosulfuron-methyl or ethoxysulfuron in POS resulted in the highest control levels of Richardia scabra and Cyperus ferax. Mild phytointoxication symptoms to the crop were more persistent with ethoxysulfuron at 120 g ha -1 . The acceptable control of the weed species and similar yield to the hand-hoeing control permitted to conclude that S-metolachlor + clomazone PRE, followed by chlorimuron-ethyl and halosulfuron-methyl POS proved to be more adequate as a weed management strategy on castor crop. RESUMO -Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar o manejo de plantas daninhas com herbicidas aplicados em pré e pós-emergência na cultura da mamoneira.
