Distribution and agroclimatic characterization of potential cultivation regions of physic nut in Mexico

Abstract: -The purposes of this study were to determine the distribution and climatic patterns of current and future physic nut (Jatropha curcas) cultivation regions in Mexico, and to identify possible locations for in vivo germplasm banks establishment, using geographic information systems. Current climatic data were processed by Floramap software to obtain distribution maps and climatic patterns of regions where wild physic nuts could be found. DIVA-GIS software analyzed current climatic data (Worldclim model) and cli… Show more

“…Biofuel is an important source of renewable energy and can be used to offset the environmental impact of fossil fuel combustion. Thus, the physic nut has been increasingly cultivated in Africa and India for biodiesel production (Núñez-Colín and Goytia-Jiménez, 2009). …”

“…To start planning about the conservation and collect of germplasm as well as its characterization and evaluation it is important to know its distribution and the different climatic variation where cherimoya grows; furthermore, to identify the potential growing regions and the possible variation because of the climatic change (Zagaja 1988). All these studies can be obtained using diverse methods of Geographic Information Systems -GIS- (Jones et al 2002;Guarino et al 2002;Núñez-Colín and Goytia-Jiménez 2009;Hijmans et al 2012;Scheldeman and van Zonneveld 2011;Núñez-Colín et al 2017). In the case of cherimoya, there are not specialized studies about this subject in Mexico, although there are for Andean regions (van Zonneveld et al 2012) and the information about its distribution is dispersed.…”
