Diversity of springtails (Hexapoda) according to a altitudinal gradient

Abstract: -The objective of this work was to elevate gradient effect on diversity of Collembola, in a temperate forest on the northeast slope of Iztaccíhuatl Volcano, Mexico. Four expeditions were organized from November 2003 to August 2004, at four altitudes (2,753, 3,015, 3,250 and 3,687 m a.s.l.). In each site, air temperature, CO 2 concentration, humidity, and terrain inclination were measured. The infl uence of abiotic factors on faunal composition was evaluated, at the four collecting sites, with canonical corresp… Show more

“…P . notabilis is the most abundant Collembola species in Europe [ 10 ] and together with Isotomiella minor (Schäffer, 1896) it often represents more than 50% of the total individuals in Collembola communities [ 2 , 4 ]. It is morphologically well defined [ 11 – 14 ], but exhibits inter-population differences in tolerance to low pH, mechanical disturbances and metal pollution [ 1 , 6 ].…”

“…By contrast, Illig et al ( 2010 ) observed decreasing Collembola density with increasing altitude, probably due to low resource quality at high altitude tropical montane rainforests. In addition to local habitat‐related factors, Collembola are affected by climatic variables that change with altitude, such as temperature and precipitation (Bokhorst et al, 2018 ; García‐Gómez et al, 2009 ). Increasing temperature may reduce the life span of Collembola by affecting their physiological and reproductive activities (Mertens et al, 1983 ; Snider & Butcher, 1972 ).…”
