While the effects of metal(loid)s on vegetation and macrofauna have been widely studied, their impact on microarthropods (millimetre scale) and their bioaccumulation capacity have been less investigated. However, microarthropods provide important ecosystem services, contributing in particular to soil organic matter dynamics. This study focussed on the impact of metal(loid) pollution on the structure and distribution of microarthropod communities and their potential to bioaccumulate lead (Pb). Soil samples were collected from a contaminated historical site with a strong horizontal and vertical gradient of Pb concentrations. Microarthropods were extracted using the Berlese method. The field experiments showed that microarthropods were present even in extremely polluted soils (30,000 mg Pb kg −1 ). However, while microarthropod abundance increased with increasing soil C/N content (R 2 = 0.79), richness decreased with increasing pollution. A shift in the community structure from an oribatid-to a springtail-dominated community was observed in less polluted soils (R 2 = 0.68). In addition, Pb bioamplification occurred in microarthropods, with higher Pb concentrations in predators than in detritivorous microarthropods. Finally, the importance of feeding and reproductive ecological traits as potentially relevant descriptors of springtail community structures was highlighted. This study demonstrates the interest of microarthropod communities with different trophic levels and ecological features for evaluating the global environmental impact of metal(loid) pollution on soil biological quality.

By transforming landscapes, human activity creates new types of habitats with altered environmental characteristics that never existed before. As the process of habitat urbanization bears impact on more and more natural habitats, it is essential for us to understand the changes we bring forth in the ecological forces shaping urban animal communities. Birds are perhaps the most frequently studied model organisms by urban ecologists. It is a well known general pattern that urban avian communities have typically reduced species richness, while the density of a few successful species is often higher in cities than in adjacent more natural habitats. But it is less understood which mechanisms generate and uphold these community-level changes. In this review we discuss the most important components of the urban environment influencing birds' physiology, behaviour or morphology, and compile several recent studies to illustrate their effects. To understand urban food webs we also review the results of bottom-up and top-down approach which suggest that altered food availability and predation may play key roles in forming recent urban bird communities. We encourage future research to focus more on experimental, manipulative studies, that would help us not just to realize general patterns but shed more light on the mechanisms, the underlying processes prompting changes in urban bird communities.

Resumo -O objetivo foi avaliar a influência dos tipos de uso e manejo do solo sobre a fauna edáfica em diferentes épocas do ano. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos ao acaso com parcelas subdivididas, em três repetições, sendo instaladas duas armadilhas por subparcela, totalizando 36 armadilhas. Os sistemas de preparo do solo foram o plantio direto com cobertura hibernal de aveia, o plantio direto com o uso de consórcio de aveia + ervilhaca + nabo e o preparo convencional do solo com cobertura de aveia. Nas subparcelas foram implantadas as culturas de abóbora e abobrinha de tronco como culturas comerciais. A abundância da fauna do solo foi analisada pelos índices de diversidade de Shannon, Simpson e Pielou. Adicionalmente os dados analisados como ordens foram submetidos à análise multivariada de Componentes Principais (ACP). A fauna edáfica sofre influência dos sistemas de manejo, mostrandose bem mais diversa no sistema de plantio direto. As plantas de cobertura influenciam na diversidade e abundancia da fauna edáfica. Consequentemente, as diferentes épocas de coletas influenciam a fauna do solo, principalmente pela diferente oferta de alimento em cada época amostral. Os organismos mais frequentes foram os Collembola, independente dos tratamentos e época de coleta.Palavras chave -plantio direto, plantio convencional, índices de diversidade, ACP.Abstract -The objective was to evaluate the influence of the types of use and management of the soil on the edaphic fauna in different times of the year. The experimental design was a randomized block design with split plots in three replicates, with two traps per subplot, totaling 36 traps. Soil tillage systems were no-tillage with winter cover of oats, no-tillage using oat + vetch + turnip consortium and conventional soil tillage with oat cover. In the subplots the cultures of pumpkin and zucchini were implanted as commercial crops. The abundance of soil fauna was analyzed by the Shannon, Simpson and Pielou diversity indexes. In addition, the data analyzed as orders were submitted to multivariate analysis of Principal Components (PCA). The edaphic fauna is influenced by the management systems, showing itself to be much more diverse in the no-tillage system. Cover plants influence the diversity and abundance of edaphic fauna. The most common organisms were the Collembola, independent of treatments and time of collection (CONFERIR).
