Biodiversity of Collembola in urban soils and their use as bioindicators for pollution

Abstract: -The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of pollutants on the abundance and diversity of Collembola in urban soils. The research was carried out in three parks (Cişmigiu, Izvor and Unirea) in downtown Bucharest, where the intense car traffi c accounts for 70% of the local air pollution. One site in particular (Cişmigiu park) was highly contaminated with Pb, Cd, Zn and Cu at about ten times the background levels of Pb. Collembola were sampled in 2006 (July, September, November) using the transect… Show more

“…At 10 m, the toxic unit of soil was above 3200 and springtail richness was 4; at 140 m, the toxic unit was 40 and 10 springtail species were listed. A study conducted near a former mining site in Poland (Syrek et al, 2006;Fiera, 2009) showed a similar trend. On the other hand, a decrease in sensitive species was observed in the contaminated area in the case of the genus Sminthurinus sp.…”

“…and to a lesser extent Protaphorura armata and Ceratophysella armata (Winkler, 2014). Such a phenomenon promotes the development of ubiquitous species such as Lepidocyrtus lanuginosus, Mesaphorura krausbaueri, Entomobrya multifasciata and Pseudosinella alba (Fountain and Hopkin, 2004;Fiera, 2009;Santamaria et al, 2012;Winkler, 2014). These four species seem tolerant to metal soil pollution, as they were found throughout the entire study area.…”

“…arthropods which show reduced abundance and/or diversity with increasing urbanization , Fiera 2009, McIntyre & Rango 2009, Niemelä & Kotze 2009, Raupp et al 2010, van Nuland et al 2014. While available quantitative data on densities and diversities of many arthropod taxa are poor, the elevated levels of pollutants, the higher proportion of pavement cover, the increased usage of pesticides in residential gardens and park areas, the strong thinning of shrub layer, mown turf and the removal of leaf litter in green spaces, and also the high proportions of exotic plants are all assumed to reduce their presence in urban areas.…”

“…Os dados são coerentes com estudos que mostram que Collembola são os colonizadores primários de locais perturbados (BARETTA et al,. 2011;FIERA, 2009) aumentando consequentemente a sua importância relativa em comparação aos demais grupos.…”
