Imazaquin sorption in surface and subsurface soil samples

Abstract: -The objective of this work was to study the sorption and desorption of imazaquin, in surface and subsurface soil samples from Brazil. Sorption and desorption steps were carried out using batch equilibration and high performance liquid chromatography analytical routines. The value of K f,ads was positively correlated with clay content, and negatively correlated with pH of supernatant. Samples from Typic Haplustox, clayey soil profile having high clay content, provided higher K f,ads values, and negative correl… Show more

“…This was attributed to the presence of the herbicide in its anionic form ( Figure S1) at the pH of the tested soils (pH > 8). The negative charge of the herbicide would be repelled by soil colloidal particles, which are also negatively charged at alkaline pH levels (Lee et al, 1990;Oliveira et al, 2006;Rocha et al, 2002). Other soil properties that may have contributed to the lack of sorption of imazaquin on the soils are their low organic matter and iron oxides contents (Regitano et al, 1997;Rocha et al, 2002).…”

“…Several other publications confirm the dependence of sorption on both organic matter and clays (16)(17)(18)(19)(20). Since the reviews, evidence of hydrophobicity and cation exchange effects on sorption has been published (21)(22)(23)(24). This literature defines the conventional state of the art as of 2001.…”
