Show more

“…However, in the clay‐size fraction, the application of N tended to increase the content of alkyl C from 24% to 28% (Table 4, averaged values among O–M and P+M), matching a decrease in the O–alkyl and aromatic C contents. One hypothesis to explain this result is that fertilization with N could have increased the bacterial population (Vargas et al ., 2004) and therefore the microbial alkyl products (Baldock et al ., 1990) over those of unfertilized soil. Capriel (1997) also found a larger content of aliphatic C–H units when N fertilizer was applied than when it was not.…”

“…Soil tillage methods, such as the no-tillage and the conventional tillage system, may change edaphic conditions and, consequently, influence the biological processes of the soil (Alvarez et al, 1995;Vargas et al, 2004). Some studies report an increase in soil microbial biomass in the no-tillage system in relation to the conventional tillage system, and they associate these results to the fact that the no-tillage system induces an increase in living and dead organic matter content, considering that the former is constituted by microorganisms that are part of the active portion of organic matter and are responsible for the decomposition, mineralization, and immobilization of animal and plant residues Nascimento et al, 2009).…”
