-The aim of this study was to determine a suitable plot size for field experiments with the sunflower. An experiment was carried out in a randomised complete block design with 14 sunflower cultivars and 10 replications. The plots consisted of four rows, six metres in length, spaced 0.7 m apart with 0.3 m between plants. The working area of the plot (7.56 m 2 ), consisting of the two central rows, was divided into 12 basic units, each consisting of three plants per row (0.63 m 2 ), from where the yield of the sunflower seeds was obtained. Suitable plot size was estimated using the intraclass correlation coefficient method. The detectable difference between treatments was also estimated (d). The optimum plot size for the evaluation of grain yield in the sunflower was 2.52 m 2 (working area), considering a boundary of one row on each side. Greater gains in experimental precision (16%) with increases in plot size, occurred up to eight basic units (5.04 m 2 ) using seven replications. Increasing the number of replications and the plot size was more efficient in increasing experimental precision, than increasing the number of cultivars.

ABSTRACT-Were evaluated three characters in papaya seedlings 'Baixinho de Santa Amália' to estimate the optimum plot size and the number of replications in a completely randomized experiment, a randomized block and Latin square. The characters were seedling height, leaf number and length of roots from uniformity test with 240 seedlings. The determination of the optimum plot size was done by applying the method of Hatheway (1961). The number of seedlings per plot for seedling production is variable depending on the number of treatments and replications assumed precision, the character in question and the experimental design. Comparing designs, the plot size is greater in the Latin square, followed by a randomized block design and completely randomized, and this difference is more pronounced the lower the number of treatments and replicates used. For the same number of treatments and the same precision, the most efficient use of the experimental area is given using smaller plot, with more replications, which require less space in the nursery than larger plots with fewer replications. For experiments completely randomized and randomized blocks with five or more treatments, four replications, and precision of 15% around the mean, it is recommended to use nine seedlings per plot. TAMANHO DE PARCELA NA AVALIAÇÃO DE MUDAS DE MAMOEIRO'BAIXINHO DE SANTA AMÁLIA' EM TUBETES RESUMO-Foram avaliados três caracteres em plântulas de mamoeiro 'Baixinho de Santa Amália' com objetivo de estimar o tamanho ótimo de parcelas e o número de repetições em experimento inteiramente ao acaso, em blocos ao acaso e em quadrado latino. Os caracteres foram altura da plântula, número de folhas e comprimento da maior raiz a partir de ensaio em branco com 240 plântulas. A determinação do tamanho ótimo de parcela foi feita aplicando-se o método de Hatheway (1961). O número de plântulas por parcela para produção de mudas é variável em função do número de tratamentos e de repetições, precisão assumida, do caráter em questão e do delineamento experimental. Na comparação entre delineamentos, o tamanho de parcela é maior no quadrado latino, seguido de blocos ao acaso e inteiramente ao acaso, sendo que esta diferença é mais acentuada quanto menor for o número de tratamentos e de repetições. Para um mesmo número de tratamentos e mesma precisão, o uso mais eficiente de área experimental se dá utilizando-se parcelas menores, com maior número de repetições, as quais demandam menor espaço em viveiro do que parcelas maiores, com menor número de repetições. Para experimentos inteiramente ao acaso e em blocos ao acaso com cinco ou mais tratamentos, quatro repetições, e, precisão de 15% em torno da média, recomenda-se o uso de nove plântulas por parcela. RESUMO -O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o tamanho ótimo de parcela de três híbridos de girassol em três arranjos espaciais de plantas. O teste de uniformidade foi instalado no campo experimental da Universidade Federal do Recôncavo da Bahia, em Cruz das Almas, Brasil, em 2012. As parcelas foram compostas por seis linhas de 36 m, sendo dispostos três arranjos espaciais de plantas, quais sejam: A1 (0,45 mx 0,49 m); A2 (0,70 mx 0,32 m); e A3 (0,90 mx 0,25 m). Foram distribuidos em cada arranjo três híbridos de girassol: Hélio 250; Hélio 253; e Aguara 3. Para a avaliação do tamanho ótimo de parcela , aos 110 dias após a semeadura, foi colhida uma amostra de 180 unidades básicas (plantas) por parcela, no qual foram avaliadas a altura final de planta, o diâmetro final da haste e o diâmetro do capítulo. Foram simulados 31 tamanhos de parcela dos três híbridos e para cada variável analisada em cada planta considerada como uma unidade básica. A estimativa do tamanho de parcela para a cultura de girassol foi calculada pelo método de máxima curvatura modificada. O uso combinado do híbrido H253, instalado no arranjo de 0,45 mx 0,49 m, promoveu a obtenção do maior valor da máxima curvatura, estimando-se o tamanho ótimo de parcela de seis plantas. For the evaluation of the optimal plot size, at 110 days after sowing was harvested a sample of 180 basic units (plants) per plot, in which were evaluated the final plant height, the final diameter of the rod and the diameter of the chapter. Thirty-one plots sizes of three hybrids were simulated and for each variable assessed, wherein each plant was considered as a basic unit. The estimation of optimum plot size to the sunflower crop was calculated by the method of modified curvature maximum. The combined use of hybrid H253, installed in the arrangement 0.45 m x 0.49 m, promotes obtainment the greatest value of curvature maximum it was estimated the optimum plot size of six plants.
