Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.r. latifolium Hutch) is very sensitive to soil conditions. The Iuiu Valley, located in the Southwest of Bahia State in Brazil, was an important area for cotton production but an inadequate soil management for years and consequent soil quality degradation lead to the decline of the crop in the region. In an effort to reestablish cotton, this study was carried out to identify a sustainable soil management system for cotton production in the region. The experiment was carried out in Palmas de Monte Alto (Bahia, Brazil) on an Eutrichrept soil, and consisted of eight treatments (two tillage systems and four cotton cultivars). The field lay-out was a split-plot with tillage systems as main plots and cultivars as subplots. The tillage systems consisted of conventional and reduced tillage and cotton cultivars used were 'BRS Aroeira', 'BRS 201', 'Delta Opal' and 'BRS Cedro'. No significant differences were observed between the two tillage systems for plant height, stem diameter, boll weight, yield, fiber percentage, and fiber length. Conventional tillage promoted higher fiber length and uniformity for BRS 201 as well as higher fiber resistance for the other three cultivars. On the other hand, reduced tillage promoted higher micronaire index values for Delta Opal. The BRS Cedro cultivar showed a greater plant height independently from the tillage system. In conclusion, reduced tillage allowed a sustainable soil management without compromising cotton yields and quality.Additional key words: fiber quality, Gossypium hirsutum, micronaire index, soil compaction, soil tillage. Resumen Efectos del laboreo en el desarrollo de varios cultivares de algodón en el sudoeste de Bahía, BrasilEl algodonero (Gossypium hirsutum L.r. latifolium Hutch) es muy sensible a las condiciones del suelo. El Valle del Iuiu, localizado al suroeste del estado de Bahía en Brasil, se destaca como una importante zona productora de algodón, pero el inadecuado sistema de manejo del suelo durante años y la consiguiente degradación de la calidad del suelo han ocasionado el declive de este cultivo en la región. En un esfuerzo por reestablecer este cultivo, se realizó un estudio para identificar un sistema de manejo del suelo sostenible para la producción de algodón en la región. El experimento se llevó a cabo en Palmas de Monte Alto (Bahía, Brasil) sobre un Eutrochrept, y constó de ocho tratamientos (dos sistemas de laboreo y cuatro cultivares de algodón) en un diseño experimental en bloques aleatorios, en esquema de parcela subdividida. Los sistemas de laboreo consistieron en un laboreo convencional y un laboreo reducido y los cuatro cultivares utilizados fueron 'BRS Aroeira', 'BRS 201', 'Delta Opal' y 'BRS Cedro'. -Nitrogen is the nutrient that limits most the production in the culture of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L). The nutritional requirements among cultivars of the same species is distinct, under the same conditions of culture and for the same agricultural year. With the objective of evaluating four different ways of nitrogen application in the production components of different genotypes of sunflower, an experiment was carried out in a randomized block design in a 3 x 4 factorial scheme (genotypes x ways of nitrogen applying) with four replicates . The treatments consisted on the combination of three varieties: Agrobel 960, Agrobel 962 and V -2000 and four different ways of nitrogen application: 100% at 20 days after sowing (DAS) -(0-100-0-0); 30% at sowing and 70% at 20 DAS -(30-70-0-0); 30% at sowing, 30% at 20 DAS e 40% at 40 DAS 20% at sowing, 30% at 20 DAS,. Measured variables were: height of the plant, height of the capitulum, diameter of the stem, diameter of the capitulum and achene yield. The ways of nitrogen application affected all components of yield. The N formulation (30-70-0-0) has determined the best results for the variables studied, but the form (30-30-40-0) provided results comparable to treatment (30-70-0-0); treatments where N was applied as (20-30-30-20) caused decrease in the performance of sunflower for all variables. The varietal effect was observed only for plant height and height of the capitulum. The highest yield of achene achieved was 1.639 kg ha-1, with no superiority for the hybrids Agrobel 960 and 962 in relation to the variety 122/V2000 Embrapa.

ResumoO objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência dos sistemas de manejo e identificar a velocidade na operação de semeadura que permite o melhor desenvolvimento do girassol. O experimento foi instalado na Fazenda Experimental Lageado, pertencente à Faculdade de Ciências Agronômicas da UNESP, campus de Botucatu/São Paulo. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso, seguindo o esquema de parcela subdividida, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos efetuados nas parcelas foram: os sistemas de manejo do solo (semeadura direta com mecanismo sulcador tipo haste-SDh; semeadura direta com mecanismo sulcador tipo disco duplo-SDd; cultivo reduzido-CR e cultivo convencional-CC). Nas subparcelas, as velocidades utilizadas para a semeadura foram de 3; 5; 6 e 8 km h -1 . As variáveis analisadas foram: população inicial e final de plantas, altura de plantas, diâmetro do caule e produtividade de aquênios. O tratamento SDh é o sistema de manejo recomendado para a implantação da cultura e o desenvolvimento do híbrido comercial de girassol Hélio 358. O aumento da velocidade na operação de semeadura compromete a população de plantas e, conseqüentemente, o desenvolvimento da cultura.Palavras chave: velocidade de semeadura, mecanismos sulcadores, oleaginosa Evaluation of different management systens in the development of the culture of suflower AbstractThe aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of management systems and identify the speed of seeding operation that allows better development of the sunflower. The experiment was installed in Fazenda Experimental Lageado, belonging to Faculdade de Ciências Agronômicas of UNESP, Botucatu campus. The experimental design was randomized blocks, following the diagram in subdivided parcels, with four replicates. The treatments performed on the parcels were: the soil management systems (no-tillage system with scarifier shank type engine-NTs; no-tillage system with double-disk type scarifier mechanism NTd; miniumum tillage-MT and conventional tillage-CT). In the subplots, the speeds used for seeding were 3; 5; 6 and 8 km h -1 . The variables analyzed were: initial and final population of plants, plant height, stem diameter, and productivity of achenes. The NTs treatment is the management system recommended for deployment of culture and the development of commercial hybrid sunflower Hélio 358. The increased speed in the seeding operation compromises the population of plants and, consequently, the development of culture.
