Effects of leaf compounds, climate and natural enemies on the incidence of thrips in cassava

Abstract: -The objective of this study was to determine the effects of rainfall, temperature, sunlight and relative humidity, as well as predators and parasitoids, leaf chemical composition and levels of leaf nitrogen and potassium on the intensity of Scirtothrips manihoti (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) attack on cassava Manihot esculenta Crantz var. Cacau. The leaf compounds (E)-farnesene/trans-farnesol and D-friedoolean-14-en-3-one correlated significantly with the population of S. manihoti. Insect population decreased in … Show more

“…In addition, this leaf region has better nutritional qual-ity than the adaxial one. and sucking phytophagous insects and mites prefer the abaxial surface of upper leaves (or growth points) (Miranda et al 1998;Silva et al 1998;Leite et al 1999Leite et al , 2002Leite et al , 2003. The resistance of the abaxial surface tissue to piercing is lower (due to the presence of lacunary parenchyma) than that of the adaxial side (with palisade parenchyma), which favors greater suction of the phloem sap on the abaxial surface (Chu et al 1995(Chu et al , 2007.…”
