AbstractIt brings to light some indicators on the intrinsic and extrinsic characteristics of scientific journals. It aims to present a mapping of the scientific production on the topic scientific journals, focusing on the articles of periodicals present in the Database in Information Science. The method adopted was systematic mapping, which showed heterogeneity in the number of articles published over the years; homogeneity in the number of publications in the journals, with a marked discrepancy in only one journal; prevalence of collective authorship with high index of differentiation with individual authorship; preference for mixed methods of research; and finally, a diversity of subjects was observed, and aspects related to scientific communication, electronic periodicals, periodicals portals, usability and electronic system of periodical publishing appear as recurring subjects. It was concluded that, even though it is an issue in vogue, given its contribution to science and the new paradigms imposed by the appearance of the electronic journal, efforts must be made to ensure the continuous qualification and improvement of these publications. Actions should also be undertaken to provide greater legitimacy, reliability, and security in editorial processes, so as to increase the visibility, use, and recognition of journals as the principal and reliable means of scientific communication for the twenty-first century.
