This study evaluates the influence of different irrigation frequencies and different nitrogen fertigation frequencies on the growth performance of the watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) culture. Two experiments were conducted at the Paraguay farm in the Cruz municipality, Ceará, Brazil. They was randomized blocks design with six treatments and four replications. The irrigation frequency experiment consisted of the application of different irrigation frequencies. The treatments were: DM -daily irrigation in the morning with 100% daily dosage; DT -daily irrigation in the afternoon, with 100% daily dosage; DMT -twice daily irrigation, with 50% daily dosage in the morning and 50% daily dosage in the afternoon; 2D -irrigation every two days; 3D -irrigation every three days and 4D -irrigation every four days. To the experiment with different nitrogen fertigation frequencies, the treatments used were: 2F -2 fertigations in a cycle; 4F -4 fertigations in a cycle; 8F -8 fertigations in a cycle; 16F -16 fertigations in a cycle; 32F -32 fertigations in a cycle and 64F -64 fertigations in a cycle. We evaluated the marketable yield (PC), fruit weight (M), polar diameter (DP), equatorial diameter (DE), shell thickness (EC) and soluble solids (SS). The low concentration of boron in the soil is one of the main challenges for the cultivation of watermelon in regions of the Cerrado biome, due to the appearance of rot apical which may occur due to the lack of boron in the soil or due to boron toxicity by the use of fertilizers without recommendation. There is a narrow range between the appropriate and toxic level pf boron. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of boron doses on watermelon production in the soils with and without liming. The experiment was carried out in a dystrophic yellow latosol soil, in a randomized block design in subdivide plots: plots (i) liming or without liming and subplots: (ii) boron (0, 2, 4 and 5 kg.ha-1), with 8 treatments and 5 replicates. The data were analyzed by regression analysis. The maximum point of the equation was estimated by equating the first derivative of the equation to zero. The diameter, length, weight, number of commercial fruits, bark thickness, percentage of fruits with apical rot, commercial fruits, female flowers, total soluble solids, productivity and profitability were evaluated. The use of boron provided positive effects on the analyzed variables. However, in concentrations higher than 4 kg ha-1 its behavior was fitted with a quadratic model (R²: 0.77 to 0.99). The range was equivalent to 2 to 4 kg ha-1 of boron with a specific level of 2.4 kg.ha-1 , whereas the base saturation rose to 70%, promoted greater productivity for watermelon cultivated in dystrophic yellow latosol under conditions of the closed biome.

The objective of the present study was to assess the effects of phosphate fertilization management on root traits of irrigated watermelon crop by minirhizotron observation. The experiment was conducted in an area with acrisol soil in Mossoró-RN using a completely randomized block design with six replicates corresponding to the assessment times. The evaluated parameters were four doses of P (34, 80, 137, and 206 kg ha−1 de P2O5) and two methods of fertilization: basal fertilization (F0) and basal + top-dressing fertilization (F1). Triple superphosphate was used for basal fertilization and monoammonium phosphate was used for top-dressing (34 kg ha−1 of P2O5). In addition, two control treatments were included: one without the use of P (C1) and another with only top-dressed P at a dose of 103 kg ha−1 of P2O5 (C2). A portable root scanner was used to collect images through 0.6-m clear tubes (minirhizotrons). The root mean diameter decreased with increasing doses of phosphate in F0; however, fine roots were observed in C2. There was a positive effect of P doses on the number of roots only in F0. In the absence of P, the reduction in the number of roots was greater than the reduction in total length.
