Comparison of H/Al stoichiometry of mineral and organic soils in Brazil

Abstract: SUMMARYExchangeable Al has been used as a criterion for the calculation of lime requirement in several Brazilian States. However, the laboratory method with extraction by a 1 mol L -1 KCl solution followed by indirect alkaline titration is not accurate for some Brazilian soils, mainly in the case of soils with high organic matter content. The objective of this study was therefore to evaluate the stoichiometry of H + /Al 3+ in KCl soil extracts. The results suggested that organically complexed Al is the main co… Show more

“…Estudando Histosols da Flórida, Zelazny & Carlisle (1974) constataram variações de pH em KCl entre 0,4 e 0,7 unidades menores que o pH em água. Os valores de pH em água estão dentro da faixa reportada por Perez et al (2009): 3,0 a 5,9. Já Volk & Schnitzer (1973), em estudo sobre subsidência em Histosols na Flórida, encontraram valores de pH em água de 5,4 a 7,9.…”

“…According to Pérez et al (2009), the procedure of extraction with KCl and titration with NaOH determines H + , identified as exchangeable acidity (Sposito, 1989). Therefore, in this context, there is no differentiation between "exchangeable H + " and the H + produced by the hydrolysis of Al.…”

“…When determining Al contents in 18 horizons of mineral soils with kaolinite and/or iron/aluminium oxyhydroxides as the main clay fraction minerals, Pérez et al (2009) concluded that most protons quantified in the extracts of the mineral soils, i.e., the exchangeable acidity, originated from the hydrolysis of exchangeable Al.…”

“…From the values of volume of NaOH standard solutions consumed in titrations, the Acidity Index (mol L -1 ) for each of the studied samples was calculated according to Equation 1. The same experiment was carried out for the volumes collected in the test mix negative control (absence of microorganism) (Perez, Anjos, Ebeling, & Pereira, 2009).…”
