Phylogeny and revision of the bee genus Rhinocorynura Schrottky (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Augochlorini), with comments on its female cephalic polymorphism

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Phylogeny and revision of the bee genus Rhinocorynura Schrottky (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Augochlorini), with comments on its female cephalic polymorphism. A taxonomic revision and a phylogeny for the species of Rhinocorynura are provided. Six species are recognized: R. briseis, R. crotonis, R. inflaticeps and R. vernoniae stat. nov., the latter removed from synonymy with R. inflaticeps, in addition to two newly described species, R. brunnea sp. nov. and R. viridis sp. nov. Lectotypes for Halictus croton… Show more

“…The few genera with systematic treatment including phylogeny have biogeographical patterns that are not congruent with those in the literature and common to other bees (Coelho, ; Gonçalves & Melo, , ; Gonçalves, , ). Augochlora , Megalopta and Rhinocorynura groups are found in southeastern and central Brazil, with some species also being found in forests of the western and northern tributaries of the Amazon River.…”

“…Molecular data were not available for Paracorynurella, but morphological data can be considered to be in strong support of the placement of this genus within the group. This is the most-studied clade in the Augochlorini, with published phylogenetic hypotheses for all species (Gonçalves, 2010;Gonçalves & Melo, 2012).…”

“…amphitrite exhibits a remarkable variation in body size and head shape (Fig 3). The variation is continuous and does not correspond to true dimorphism among females, with a distinct macrocephalic morph as found in other groups such as Rhinocorynura (Gonçalves & Melo, 2012). Nevertheless, we use herein the term macrocephalic for the large females with enlarged gena and developed distal part of the mandibular adductor ridge.…”
