Eastern Amazonia is an area with great biological diversity that has suffered rapid deforestation and forest fragmentation over the years. Because of the scarcity of data on the fauna and flora, the northwest of the state of Maranhão has become a priority area for studies that seek to gain a better understanding of bee fauna. Between August 2013 and December 2014, in collections at two-month intervals, a total of 1047 bees belonging to 70 species were collected using two methods (an insect net and scent-baited traps). Apinae was the most abundant subfamily and had the greatest species richness (63 species and 1039 individuals); the most notable tribes in this subfamily were Meliponini (20 species and 445 individuals) and Euglossini (24 species and 452 individuals). In all, 62.8% of the total richness was sampled with an insect net and 34.2% with bait traps. Bees were present in every collection month, and August and December were the months with the greatest richness and abundance, respectively. Although the species accumulation curve did not stabilize, the results were positive as three new species were recorded for the Maranhão state: Bombus transversalis (Olivier, 1789); Xylocopa suspecta Moure and Camargo, 1988; and Xylocopa macrops Lepeletier, 1841, and eleven for the Amazonian region of the state.

The orchid bees are a very important group of pollinators distributed in the Neotropics. Although a lot of studies concerning male euglossine bees have been done in this region, few works have so far been carried out in the Cerrado biome. This manuscript has the main objective to present the orchid bee community from a Gallery Forest in the Northeastern Brazilian Cerrado landscape, taking account the species composition, abundance, seasonality and hourly distribution. Male euglossine bees were collected monthly from October 2007 to May 2009, in the Reserva Florestal da Itamacaoca belonging to the Companhia de Água e Esgoto do Maranhão, in Chapadinha municipality, Maranhão State. The scents eucalyptol, eugenol and vanillin were utilized, between 07:00 and 17:00hr, to attract the euglossine males. Cotton balls were dampened with the scents and suspended by a string on tree branches 1.5m above soil level, set 8m from one another. The specimens were captured with entomological nets, killed with ethyl acetate and transported to the laboratory to be identified. A total of 158 individuals and 14 species of bees were recorded. The genus Eulaema was the most representative group of euglossine bees in relation to the total number of the sampled individuals, accounting for 50.6% of bees followed by Euglossa (26.6%), Eufriesea (15.2%) and Exaerete (7.6%). The most frequent species were Eulaema nigrita (27.8%), Eulaema cingulata (19%) and Euglossa cordata (18.3%). Many species typical of forested environments were found in samples, like Euglossa avicula, Euglossa violaceifrons and Eulaema meriana, emphasizing the role played by the Gallery Forests as bridge sites to connect the two great biomes of Amazonia and Atlantic Forest. The occurrence of Exaerete guaykuru represents the second record of this species for the Neotropical region, and both records coming from the Gallery Forest zones. The male euglossine bees were sampled mainly in the dry season, where 62.5% of the individuals were collected in that period. Eufriesea species appeared at the baits only in the wet season. The hourly frequency of bees at scent baits showed a clear preference for the morning period, where 87.9% visited the baits from 07:00 to 12:00hr. As restingas são consideradas como um dos tipos vegetacionais mais expressivos da costa brasileira, porém as definições das fisionomias deste ecossistema ainda permanecem conflituosas de acordo com alguns autores. Por este motivo, o presente estudo teve como objetivo descrever as fisionomias da praia de Panaquatira (02°28’23”S 44°03’13,8”W), situada no município de São José de Ribamar, Maranhão. Para caracterização das fisionomias seguiu-se a classificação usual nos estudos de restinga do Nordeste do país, que categoriza as formações fisionômicas em campo, frutíceto e floresta, com suas diferentes subdivisões. A partir de levantamentos realizados na área identificou-se seis fisionomias: campo aberto não inundável, campo aberto não inundável-halófilo, campo fechado inundável de dunas, campo fechado inundável de pós-dunas, frutíceto aberto não inundável e frutíceto fechado não inundável. De modo geral, o estudo possibilitou a identificação de diversas fisionomias associadas à restinga de Panaquatira, demonstrando assim, tratar-se de um ecossistema altamente diversificado. Além de contribuir com dados essenciais para a execução de estudos mais detalhados, futuramente, sobre a vegetação costeira. A B S T R A C TThe “restinga” is considered as one of the most significant vegetation types of the Brazilian coast, but the physiognomic definitions this ecosystem are still in conflict according to some authors. For this reason, this study aimed to describe the physiognomies at Panaquatira Beach (02 ° 28'23 "S 44 ° 03'13,8" W), located in São José de Ribamar, Maranhão. The physiognomic characterization followed the usual classification in “restinga” studies of Northeast Region of Brazil, which categorize the physiognomic formations in the field, scrub and forest, with their different subdivisions. From studies performed in this area were identified six physiognomies: non-ﬂooded open ﬁelds, halophilous ﬂooded open fields, flooded closed dune fields, flooded closed field after dune, non-ﬂooded open scrub and non-ﬂooded closed scrub. Overall, the study enabled the identification of several physiognomies associated with the "restinga" of Panaquatira, thus demonstrating that this is a highly diverse ecosystem. In addition to contributing with essential data to perform more detailed studies in the future, on the coastal vegetation.Keywords: physiognomy, Maranhão coast, conservation.
