Estudo descritivo, transversal, cujo objetivo foi analisar a associação entre as dimensões de apoio social e o perfil de cuidadores familiares de pacientes com dependência. Entrevistaram-se 110 cuidadores, utilizando os seguintes instrumentos: questionário de caracterização sociodemográfica, Social Network Index , Medical Outcomes Study e Índice de Barthel. Os testes U de Mann-Whitney e Kruskal-Wallis foram usados para comparar as dimensões de apoio social e as variáveis qualitativas, e a correlação de Spearman para as variáveis quantitativas. Cuidadores que não sabiam ler nunca haviam estudado apresentaram melhor percepção de apoio social em todas as dimensões, exceto na afetiva. Na dimensão interação positiva, aqueles que possuíam companheiro e negaram sobrecarga apresentaram média superior a dos demais grupos. O número de familiares e amigos apresentou correlação com todas as dimensões de apoio social. Os resultados indicam que a rede social é importante para a percepção de apoio.

Objective: To assess the functional capacity and to determine the difference between the means of functional capacity (basic and instrumental activities of daily living) and the age groups of elderly residents in an outlying area in the hinterland of Bahia/Northeast of Brazil. Method: Analytical study with cross-sectional design and a sample of 150 elderly individuals enrolled in four Health Units in the municipality of Jequié, Bahia, Brazil. The instrument consisted of sociodemographic and health data, the Barthel Index and the Lawton scale. Results: In all, 78.00% of the elderly were classified as dependent in the basic activities and 65.33% in the instrumental activities of daily living. Using the KruskalWallis test, we found a statistically significant difference between the means of instrumental activities and the age groups (p=0.011). Conclusion: An elevated number of elderly were classified as dependent in terms of functional capacity and increased age is related to greater impairment in the execution of instrumental activities of daily living.

Objective: To clinically and epidemiologically characterize patients receiving home care in the city of Maceio, in the state of Alagoas, Brazil. Methods: An observational, crosssectional study with a sample of 859 patients was carried out, based on data obtained from the medical records of institutions that provide a home care service. A total of 445 patients were from a public service and 414 were from a private service. Descriptive analysis was used for the demographic, clinical and functional variables. Results: Most patients were elderly, female, bedridden, fed orally and had neurological disorders, with stroke the most common diagnosis. Regarding patient evolution, 16.8% of individuals were discharged from home care, 45% of patients died and 24% were hospitalized during the period of home care. A total of 9% of patients had a tracheostomy, 84.7% breathed room air, 9.3% used oxygen, 4% used noninvasive mechanical ventilation, 1.9% used invasive mechanical ventilation, and 24.9% of patients had pressure ulcers. All patients received medical visits, with 693 receiving nursing care, 767 undergoing physiotherapy, 233 receiving speech therapy sessions, 665 patients accompanied by a nutritionist, 64 undergoing occupational therapy sessions and 98 receiving counseling. Conclusion: It was noted that some results differed from literature and between the public and private service. This divergence could be related to the specific epidemiology of each region and the type of insurance paying for care (Unified Health Service or Private).
