Tire-breeding mosquitoes of public health importance along an urbanisation gradient in Buenos Aires, Argentina

Abstract: Used vehicle tires are a source of mosquito vectors and a means of their introduction and expansion. With the aim of assessing the effects of urbanisation on the main mosquito vectors in temperate Argentina, the infestation levels of Aedes aegypti (L.) and Culex pipiens L. were studied in used tires from highly urbanised cities to low-urbanised small towns in Buenos Aires. Immatures of both species accounted for 96% of the 9,722 individuals collected; the total individuals collected represented seven species. … Show more

“…In contrast, a single container type was found to produce >75% of immatures on vacant lots (tires) and in parking lots (flower pots). The importance of tires for production of mosquitoes in non-residential settings in Latin America was noted previously (Lopes et al 1993, Morrison et al 2006, Rubio et al 2011). We also found greater abundance of Ae.…”

“…This agrees with results of previous studies from Mérida (Garcia-Rejon et al 2008, 2011a; Manrique-Saide et al 2008, 2012, 2013) and underscores the importance of controlling mosquitoes in larval habitats. Highdiversity of species in tires also was reported from Argentina (Rubio et al 2011). In addition to containers on residential premises and storm-water drains/catch basins along streets/ sidewalks, our data indicated that containers in vacant lots are productive mosquito habitats in Mérida City.…”

“…Linnaeus, 1758 (Diptera: Culicidae), hereby referred to as the Pipiens Assemblage following Harbach (2012), represent the most important Culex species from a medical and veterinary standpoint because they are vectors of multiple pathogens affecting humans, domestic and wild animals (reviewed in Vinogradova 2000). In Argentina, these mosquitoes have been recently implicated as vectors of St. Louis encephalitis virus, West Nile virus and dirofilariasis (Rubio et al 2011, Vezzani et al 2011). Since there is no treatment or vaccine against most of these diseases, entomological surveillance and mosquito control remain as the main public health strategies.…”
