Tegumentary leishmaniasis outbreak in Bella Vista City, Corrientes, Argentina during 2003

Abstract: Tegumentary leishmaniasis (TL) is endemic in area of Northern Argentina that includes nine political provinces and three bio-regions: the 'Yungas' and 'Paranaense' subtropical forests, and the xeric 'Chaco'. Although TL was identified in Argentina almost a century ago, the first recorded outbreak took place in 1984-1987 in the 'Yungas' region, and this was found to be due to Leishmania braziliensis (Sosa Estani et al. 2000. After this outbreak, the relative increased incidence of TL both children and females s… Show more

“…18 Higher frequency of ACL cases among males between the ages of 15 and 49 has also been reported in other states. [21][22][23] The current study showed that most patients had the cutaneous form of the disease, lived in urban environments and acquired ACL during work or leisure activities. It has been observed that in Latin America and in Brazil a significant decrease in forest areas has led to an ACL increase in urban regions which, consequently, requires new methods of disease control.…”

“…Therefore, the peaks of cutaneous leishmaniasis according to the probable date of start of the lesion (ACL) are associated with the peaks of gravid females, and not with the highest peaks of adults [28]. It means that given the incubation period of leishmaniasis in humans, the increase in cases is usually recorded in epidemics or during endemic years, for ACL and VL, towards the end of the season of activity of vectors, in Argentina during autumn, especially in the month of April [49–51]. Consistently with these results, the best combination of climatic predictors of abundance of Phlebotominae usually includes rain [52], and the vectors peak is positively associated at different times after rainfall, with lag periods of rainfall-vector abundance up to one year for Ny.…”

“…In Colombia, the Chaparral County reported an outbreak that lasted 5 years (2003–2008) and was considered the largest CL outbreak ever recorded in the country [21]. Also, Argentina recorded outbreaks in the Bella Vista, Formosa, and Salta Counties [31, 32]. In addition, the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) has caused a growth of deforestation and of the Phlebotomine population, which has led to the rise of occurrence of CL [3336].…”
