-In this work, the survey of simuliid species and the study of their spatial distribution in four streams of a small watershed situated in Londrina, Paraná State, were carried out from January to October 2007. Changes in the species composition of the breeding sites were also checked along the sampling months. Seventeen black fl y species were found, being Simulium botulibranchium Lutz, Simulium travassosi d'Andretta & d'Andretta, Simulium anamariae Vulcano, Simulium brachycladum Lutz & Pinto and Simulium metallicum s.l. Bellardi new records for Paraná State. The Canonical Correspondence Analysis showed that the environmental variables most correlated to the species distribution among sample sites were water conductivity and those linked to physical dimensions of the breeding sites, like width, depth and water velocity. The matrix of faunistic similarity among collecting dates was negatively correlated to the time interval of sampling matrix for three of the water bodies studied, showing the existence of temporal changes in the species composition. According to Multiple Regression Analysis, temporal abundance variation of Simulium perfl avum Roubaud, Simulium inaequale Paterson & Shannon and Simulium lutzianum s.l. Pinto was not linked to air temperature, photoperiod and rainfall, suggesting the infl uence of other factors, probably those directly associated to specifi c breeding site conditions. The results indicate that differences in physical and chemical characteristics among water bodies may affect the taxonomic composition of simuliids in this watershed.

Black flies are abundant benthic organisms in well-oxygenated running water and are considered effective bioindicators of water quality. Information on the ecology of these organisms at the species level is important, since up to now information has mainly been available on a family level. The aim of this study was to evaluate the composition of black flies and their relationships to a group of physical and chemical factors in four small rivers of the Eastern Hills around Bogotá, Colombia. These headwaters are protected by the Empresa de Acueducto y Alcantarillado de Bogotá. Black fly larvae and pupae were collected during four sampling periods during the dry season to the early rainy season of 2012. Multivariate methods were used to determine the presence of each species in relation to dissolved oxygen, nitrates, pH, temperature, and water velocity. PCA ordination revealed a physicochemical environment with a tendency towards a certain homogeneity in the fourrivers studied. The DCA ordination confirmed that in La Vieja River the G. ortizi complex dominated while S. muiscorum was dominant in the other three rivers. Similarly, according to the NMDS, the composition of black flies in Arzobispo and Chorro de Padilla rivers was similar, while that of El Delirio and La Vieja rivers were different, especially in this last river. The rivers hadlow species richness (four species and one species complex). Simulium muiscorum was negatively correlated with dissolved oxygen, temperature and current velocity while S. ignescens was associated with slightly more oxygenated waters and S. furcilatum with fastercurrents.The low species diversity and richness for the four rivers is consistent with previous report sof low Neotropical diversity of black flies. Results showed that simuliid species could possibly be good indicators of the environmental conditions of Eastern Hills rivers around Bogotá.

In this paper we clarify the status of some poorly known blackfly species from the Neotropical Region. Information is provided about their depositories, their condition, and already-established synonyms. Fifteen new synonyms are established, two species are assigned to a different subgenus, and five lectotypes are designated based on an examination of type material. The following new synonyms are proposed: Simulium tarsatum Macquart (= S. mexicanum Bellardi, S. seriatum Knab, S. aureopunctatum Malloch, S. placidum Knab, S. lugubre Lutz & Nuñez Továr, S. turgidum Hoffmann, Trichodagmia laticalx Enderlein, T. latidigitus Enderlein, S. bellardii Py-Daniel & Moreira Sampaio); S. nigrimanum Macquart (= T. spadicidorsum Enderlein); and S. townsendi Malloch (= S. chalcocoma Knab, T. ecuadoriensis Enderlein, T. latitarsis Enderlein, T. strigata Enderlein, S. muiscorum Bueno, Moncada & Muñoz de Hoyos). Five lectotypes are designated for the following species names: T. laticalx, T. latidigitus, T. spadicidorsum, T. ecuadoriensis and T. latitarsis. Two species, S. tarsale Williston & S. tarsatum Macquart, previously unplaced in the genus Simulium s.l. are now assigned to the subgenus Hemicnetha Enderlein.
