“…To create this updated species list for Ecuador, we used Knight and Stone (1977) as a basis and included all species reported in verified peer reviewed publications since, reflecting revisions in taxonomy ( Knight 1978 , Faran 1979 , Heinemann & Belkin 1979 , Zavortink 1979a , b , Berlin & Belkin 1980 , Sirivanakarn 1982 , Ward 1984 , Forattini & Sallum 1989 , Hall et al 1999 , Sallum & Hutchings 2003 , Reinert et al 2004 , 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, Rueda et al 2004 , Harbach & Howard 2007 , González et al 2010 , Harrison et al 2012 , Ruiz-Lopez et al 2013 ). Our findings show that 179 mosquito species have been recorded in Ecuador to date, representing 26 genera and 39 subgenera (Supplementary data 2).…”

“…The main objective was to get to know the mosquito diversity and to form a taxonomic database of the fauna of Culicidae from the JNP and consequently to increase our knowledge about the distribution of these insects in the Amazon. This Culicidae inventory has already resulted in the description of two new species, Culex ( Melanoconion ) gnomatos Sallum, Hutchings & Ferreira, 1997 (Sallum et al ., 1997) and Culex ( Melanoconion ) symbletos Sallum & Hutchings, 2003 (Sallum & Hutchings, 2003), and in a description of the breeding habitat of Anopheles ( Anopheles ) forattinii Wilkerson & Sallum, 1999) (Hutchings & Sallum, 2001).…”
