Diterpenoids from Azorella compacta (Umbelliferae) active on Trypanosoma cruzi

Abstract: The anti-Trypanosoma cruzi activity of natural products isolated from Azorella compacta was evaluated, with particular emphasis on their effect against intracellular amastigotes. Five diterpenoids from A. compacta derived from mulinane and azorellane were isolated and identified. Only two products, named azorellanol (Y-2) and mulin-11,3-dien-20-oic acid (Y-5) We evaluated the effect of diterpenoids against intracellular T. cruzi forms by immunofluorescent identification of a specific membrane molecular marker … Show more

“…A partir do extrato da planta Dracocephalum kotschyi foram obtidos metabólitos potencialmente ativos contra a forma epimastigotas de Trypanosoma cruzi (Saeidnia et al, 2004). Para complementar a relevância dos estudos envolvendo extratos vegetais com atividade tripanocida, pode-se citar também o trabalho realizado com a planta Azorella compacta, através do qual foram obtidos diterpenoides ativos frente à forma amastigota intracelular do T. cruzi (Araya et al, 2003).…”

“…The whole plant is used in indigenous medicine to treat a large variety of ailments, such as bronchitis, asthma and colds and its metabolites have important biological activities. [5][6][7] Another species belonging to this genus is A. trifurcata which grows in humid prairies. Previous phytochemical studies of A. trifurcata reported the isolation of polypolyacetylenic compounds.…”

“…There is no satisfactory chemotherapy for the disease in any of its phases. The scarcity of serological control for blood donors in endemic areas and the restricted alternative of chemoprophylaxis using gentian violet, have caused a need to the development of new drugs against this disease (Araya et al, 2003;WHO, 2000).…”
