-In the search for alternative chemical control against Aedes aegypti L., many researches are developed and encouraged in order to find new insecticidal plant substances. In this work, the larvicidal effect of ten essential oils was tested on A. aegypti. The oils were extracted by steam distillation and their chemical composition determined by GL-chromatography coupled with mass spectroscopy. The essential oils were diluted in aqueous solutions of dimethyl sulfoxide with concentrations of: 100, 50, 10, and 1 mg/ml. The larvicidal activity, based on the percentage of larval mortality, was evaluated after 24h exposure to the treatments. The essential oil of Vanillosmopsis arborea Baker presented the highest larvicidal activity, with CL 50 of 15.9 mg/ml and CL 90 of 28.5 mg/ml. On the other hand the essential oil of O. gratissimum L. showed the lower activity with CL 50 de 95,80 mg/ml and CL 90 de 102,86 mg/ml. The results indicate that the tested essential oils, and particularly the V. arborea, are composed by substances with larvicidal properties for A. aegypti.KEY WORDS: Dengue, plant extract, control, mosquito RESUMO -Na busca por controle químico alternativo contra Aedes aegypti L., muitas pesquisas são desenvolvidas e estimuladas no intuito de se descobrirem novas substâncias inseticidas de origem vegetal. Neste trabalho, o efeito larvicida de dez óleos essenciais foi avaliado contra A. aegypti. Os óleos foram obtidos por arraste a vapor e sua composição química foi determinada por cromatografia gasosa acoplada a espectrometria de massa. Os óleos essenciais foram diluídos em solução aquosa de dimetil sufóxido nas concentrações: 100, 50, 10 e 1 mg/ml. A atividade larvicida, baseada na percentagem de larvas mortas, foi avaliada 24h após o tratamento. O óleo essencial de Vanillosmopsis arborea Baker induziu a maior atividade larvicida, com CL 50 de 15,9 mg/ml e CL 90 de 28,5 mg/ml., enquanto o de O. gratissimum L. apresentou a menor atividade com CL 50 de 95,80 mg/ml e CL 90 de 102,86 mg/ml. Os resultados indicam que os óleos essenciais avaliados, principalmente o de V. arborea, são compostos por substâncias com efeito larvicida contra A. aegypti.

-Pediculosis is a worldwide head infestation caused by Pediculus humanus capitis DeGeer. Resistance to chemical active ingredients shows the importance of new approaches for head lice control. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the potential insecticide activity of the medicinal plant Tagetes minuta (Asteraceae) against P. humanus capitis as well as to investigate histopathological aspects to find the target sites of the botanical extract in the insect. Lice were collected from heads of infested children 6-12 years old from Marília, São Paulo State, Brazil. All the procedures from the collection to the insecticide evaluation were done according to the World Health Organization protocols. Batches of 10 lice each were released onto a clean piece of filter paper in a petri dish. A 100 ppm concentration of essential oil impregnated filter papers were made by dropping 0.1 ml of T. minuta essential oil. Petri dishes were placed in a rearing chamber (30ºC and 70% relative humidity) in the dark. Eight replicates were used for treatment and two replicates for control batches. The Median Lethal Time (LT 50 ) was 16.4 ± 1.62 min. For histophatological investigation, twenty treated and untreated lice were fixed in 10% solution of formalin for 24h and processed according to classical histology techniques. Examined cross sections of treated adults showed disassembly of actin and myosin filaments arrangement when compared to untreated adults. This aspect allied to the LT 50 obtained suggests a toxic action of the T. minuta essential oil.KEY WORDS: Insecta, pediculosis, botanical extract RESUMO -De distribuição mundial, a pediculose é uma infestação na cabeça causada pelo piolho Pediculus humanus capitis De Geer. A resistência já verificada a diversos ingredientes ativos químicos demonstra a importância de serem avaliadas novas alternativas para o controle de piolhos. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar o potencial inseticida da planta medicinal Tagetes minuta (Asteraceae), conhecida como cravinho-de-defunto, contra P. humanus capitis, assim como investigar aspectos histopatológicos para se encontrarem os sítios de ação no inseto. Os piolhos foram coletados de crianças infestadas, de 6 a 12 anos de idade, no município de Marilia, SP. Todos os procedimentos desde a coleta até a avaliação da atividade inseticida foram feitos de acordo com os protocolos da Organização Mundial de Saúde. Grupos de 10 piolhos foram colocados sobre círculos de papel de filtro, no fundo de placas de Petri. Os círculos foram impregnados com o óleo essencial de T. minuta gotejando 0,1 ml de solução do extrato bruto obtendo-se a concentração de 100 ppm do extrato bruto. As placas foram colocadas em estufas de criação (30 ºC e 70% UR) no escuro. Oito repetições foram feitas para o tratamento e duas repetições para o controle. O tempo letal mediano para a concentração de 100 ppm do extrato bruto obtido foi de 16,4 ± 1,62 min. The control of tick species that affect animal production is vital for the economic welfare of the cattle industry. This study focused on testing the acaricidal activity of the essential oil from the leaves and stems of Tagetes minuta against several Brazilian tick species, including Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Amblyomma cajennense and Argas miniatus. The chemical composition of the essential oil was determined by chromatography and spectroscopy analyses, which revealed the presence of monoterpenes. The adult immersion test (AIT) and the larval packet test (LPT) were used to evaluate the efficacy of T. minuta essential oil in tick management at concentrations of 2.5, 5, 10, 20 and 40%. The results demonstrated that the T. minuta essential oil had over 95% efficacy against four species of ticks at a concentration of 20%. These results suggest that the essential oil of T. minuta could be used as an environmentally friendly acaricide.Keywords: Tagetes minuta, ticks, phytotherapy, control. ResumoO controle de carrapatos que causa impacto na produção de bovinos possui importância econômica para a cadeia produtiva. Neste trabalho objetivou-se testar a atividade acaricida do óleo essencial das folhas e caules de Tagetes minuta contra várias espécies de carrapatos brasileiros, incluindo Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Amblyomma cajennense e Argas miniatus. A composição química do óleo foi determinada por GC-MS e análises de espectroscopia de RMN, que revelaram a presença de monoterpenos. Na avaliação destas substâncias no controle do carrapato foram empregados os testes de imersão de adulto (TIA) e o de pacote de larvas (TPL) para o extrato de óleo de T. minuta nas concentrações de 2,5%; 5%; 10%; 20% e 40%. Os resultados do TPL e TIA demonstraram que o óleo essencial na concentração de 20% de T. minuta apresenta eficácia superior a 95% nas quatro espécies de carrapato. Estes resultados sugerem que o óleo essencial de T. minuta pode ser usado como um acaricida eficaz e com baixo impacto ambiental.
