Comparison of purified 12 kDa and recombinant 15 kDa Fasciola hepatica antigens related to a Schistosoma mansoni fatty acid binding protein

Abstract: Vaccines in schistosomiasis using homologous antigens have been studied extensively in experimentally infected mammalian hosts. Vaccines using heterologous antigens have received comparatively less attention. This review summarizes recent work on a heterologous 12 kDa Fasciola hepatica antigenic polypeptide which cross reacts with Schistosoma mansoni. A cDNA has been cloned and sequenced, and the predicted amino acid sequence of the recombinant protein has been shown to have significant (44%) identity with a 1… Show more

“…Cross immunity has been demonstrated among Schistosoma species and different parasitic trematodes [21-25]. One of the most studied cross reactive antigens is the native Fh12 and recombinant rFh15 F. hepatica FABP [20]. Sirisriro et al [9] developed mAb against rFABP of F. gigantica .…”

“…Cross-reactivity between F. hepatica and S. mansoni antigens has been repeatedly demonstrated in serological assays (12,16), suggesting the existence of ancestral genes conserved in the phylogeny of both species. The identification of these cross-reactive epitopes in the FhSAP-2 protein strongly suggests that the regions 21 SKQPTIDIDL 30 and 76 QQEVDYI IDH 85 of FhSAP-2 could be regions conserved between both species and could suggest the existence of a homolog of protein FhSAP-2 in S. mansoni.…”

“…Many researchers have studied FABPs from F. hepatica as vaccine candidate (4,9,12). That is the reason why this paper reports the investigation of native and recombinant F. hepatica FABP3 and its possible role in chemotherapy and as a diagnostic antigen.…”
