Digenetic trematodes (Cryptogonimidae, Acanthostominae) parasites of the Caiman, Caiman crocodilus yacare (Reptilia, Crocodylia) from the Pantanal Mato-grossense, Brazil, with the description of a new species

Abstract: Proctocaccum dorsale n. sp. is described and Caimanicola marajoara Freitas & Lent, 1938 is redescribed based on specimens collected from Caiman crocodilus yacare (Daudin) from the Pantanal Mato-grossense, State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brasil. This report extends south ward the known geographic distribution of C. marajoara. It is the first record of the genus Proctocaccum in South America, and in the caiman. Proctocaccum dorsale n. sp. differs from the other eight species in the genus by the dorsal location of t… Show more

“…Tkach and Snyder's (2003) failure to recognize the proper generic placement of Proctocaecum macroclemidis affected their discussion of potential closest relatives of P. macroclemidis, which they compared primarily with members of Caimanicola, all of which occur in the New World, most of them in Alligatoridae of Central and South America. In addition to P. macroclemidis, 1 additional member of Proctocaecum has been described since the study by Brooks and Holman (1993), i.e., Proctocaecum dorsale in Caiman jacare from Brazil (Catto and Amato, 1993). The 10 known species of Proctocaecum occur in tropical and subtropical habitats.…”

“…Este gênero de parasito é um trematóide já identiϐicado em jacarés e crocodilos, sendo parasitas do intestino destes répteis (Catto 1991, Catto & Amato 1993, Moravec 2001, Fernandes et al 2002, Tkach & Snyder 2003, Foreyt, 2005. Exemplares do gênero Acanthostomum sp.…”

“…On the African continent, the Nile crocodile C. niloticus (Laurenti) harbours three species, P. gonotyl (Dollfus, 1950), P. productum (Odhner, 1902) and P. vicinum (Odhner, 1902). A further three species, P. atae (Tubangui & Masiluñgan, 1936), P. crocodilii (Yamaguti, 1954) and P. elongatum (Tubangui & Masiluñgan, 1936), have been recorded in C. porosus Schneider from the Indomalayan region, and P. nicolli Brooks, 1980 was collected from C. johnsoni Krefft in Australia (Yamaguti, 1958;Brooks, 1980;Catto & Amato, 1993;Tkach & Snyder, 2003). This paper describes a new species of Proctocaecum, P. gairhei n.…”

“…P. macroclemidis was collected in the Alligator snapping turtle Macroclemys temmincki (Troost) and is to date the only species of the genus known to utilize a non-crocodilian host. A single species, P. dorsale Catto & Amato, 1993, has been described from Caiman yacare (Daudin) in South America. On the African continent, the Nile crocodile C. niloticus (Laurenti) harbours three species, P. gonotyl (Dollfus, 1950), P. productum (Odhner, 1902) and P. vicinum (Odhner, 1902).…”
