Sesquiterpene lactones from Vernonia

Abstract: Some informations about the sesquiterpene lactones isolated from Brazilian species of Vernonia are described, as well the results of tests developed with such compounds with respect to their anti-feedant, molluscicide, antimicrobial and analgesic properties.

“…The Brazilian folk medicine has shown great evidence that the crude extract prepared from leaves of V. condensata is able to prevent stomach and liver disturbances (2). As previously reported, sesquiterpene lactone compounds isolated from some species of Vernonia exhibited anti-fungal and anti-tumoral properties (1).…”

“…The crude extract can be dangerous in the initial wound healing stage in non-infected lesions, but our results showed that in infected ulcers this is not the case, indicating a possible antibacterial activity of V. scorpioides compounds. In the tribe Vernonieae (family: Asteraceae) sesquiterpene lactones (Lopes, 1991) are found, for which the different biological effects are described. The data suggest that these compounds have anti-inflammatory and anti-ulcer (Feltenstein et al, 2004), anti-malarial (Chung & Moon, 2009), and antibacterial (Ntutelaa et al, 2009, Saroglou et al, 2010 properties.…”
