Preliminary laboratory and field trials of a heated pheromone trap for the sandfly lutzomyia logipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae)

Abstract: A heated pheromone trap for the sandfly Lutzomyia longipalpis was tested in the laboratory using filter paper or plastic vial dispensers. Male pheromone extracted from 8 male tergal glands and absorbed on to filter paper dispensers attracted 82/120 (68.3%) of virgin females released in cages. Similarly plastic vial dispensers baited with the extract of 24 males caught 73/120 (61%). In field trials carried out near januária, Minas Gerais, Brazil using the plastic dispensers baited with extracts of 50 male terga… Show more

“…One-spot males from Sobral, for example, produce (S)-9-methylgermacrene-B, whereas the 2S males produce cembrene. A similar site occurs in Januária, MG, where the 1S L. longipalpis were reported to possess a methylsesquiterpene, and the 2S form, a diterpene (Ward et al 1990). These sympatric populations are useful because the different chemotypes can be readily identiÞed by visual inspection before biochemical analysis and thus allow us to conduct experiments to understand the roles of both pre-and postmating barriers in maintaining speciation within the L. longipalpis complex.…”

“…Furthermore, the efficacy of residual insecticide and others potential control strategies against adult forms - i.e. impregnated dog-collar [17], [56], zooprophylaxis [22] synthetic sand fly pheromone in conjunction whit insecticide [47], [57] – could be improved through of the control of immature stages of L. longipalpis population in chicken shed microhabitats.…”

“…L. longipalpis males from Araçatuba contained (S)-9-methylgermacrene-B, which has previously been found and characterized in males from Lapinha Cave, MG, Brazil (Hamilton et al 1999). This structural characterization of the sex pheromone of the Araçatuba population may allow us to use the appropriate synthetic male sex pheromone, in highly specific pheromone-baited traps and in the development of novel control strategies (Brazil et al 1989, Ward et al 1990, Dye et al 1991.…”
