Prof. Hugo de Souza Lopes and the modern system of Sarcophagidae (Diptera)

Abstract: Prof. Dr. Hugo de Souza Lopes is one of the authors of the phylogenetic classification of Sarcophagidae, especially Sarcophaginae. In this paper I present the taxonomic key of the tribes of Sarcophaginae according to his opinion; a list of the 48 genera and subgenera and the 356 species described by Prof. Lopes; and a review of subtribal construction of tribe Sarcophagini with a key of the subtribes. One new subtribe Boettcheriiscina Verves, subtr. nov. and two new monotypic genera (Mufindia Verves, gen. nov.,… Show more

“…The system proposed by Rohdendorf (1937Rohdendorf ( , 1965Rohdendorf ( , 1967 increased the subdivisions within Sarcophagidae by considering five subfamilies: Chrysogrammatinae, Macronychiinae, Miltogrammatinae, Sarcophaginae and Sarcotachininae. Rohdendorf's classification found partial support in the dipterological community in subsequent systems that considered four subfamilies: Macronychiinae, Miltogrammatinae, Paramacronychiinae and Sarcophaginae (Lopes, 1969(Lopes, , 1983(Lopes, , 1989Lopes et al, 1977;Dear, 1980;Rognes, 1986;Verves, 1989a).…”

“…Thus, the two most recent classifications of Sarcophagidae (Pape, , ; Verves, ) are in agreement in recognizing a clade (Paramacronychiinae + Sarcophaginae), even if they disagree on the genera Goniophyto Townsend and Sarcotachina Portschinsky; Pape (, ) included them in Paramacronychiinae, whereas both were included in Eumacronychiinae by Verves (). Another difference between these two systems is in the criteria for taxonomic ranking, as the subfamily Macronychiinae of Verves () is equivalent to the genus Macronychia Rondani of Pape (). However, taxonomic conventions for what constitutes sufficient distinction for a particular rank are not formalized and appear to differ among organismal groups (Avise & Liu, ), or even within the same group, as in the case for the different subfamily concepts for Sarcophagidae.…”

“…The genus Sarcophaga Meigen, in the wide circumscription of Pape (1996), Whitmore et al (2013), and Buenaventura & Pape (2017), which largely equals the tribe Sarcophagini of Verves (1989a, 1989b, 1990), contains some 900 species worldwide. Morphological separation of the species is to a large extent based on the male terminalia, and species complexes appear to exist where the sibling species are differentiated exclusively by the shape of the often highly elaborate distiphallic appendages (e.g., Blackith et al 2001, 2004; Zhang et al 2013; El-Ahmady et al 2018).…”

“…The species was initially described by Böttcher (1912) as Sarcophaga czernyi based on two males collected by L. Czerny in Croatia. For a long time, the taxonomic status, particularly the generic and subgeneric rank, was unstable (Enderlein, 1928;Rohdendorf, 1937;Strukan, 1970;Verves, 1986Verves, , 1990Lehrer, 1994;Pape, 1996). In the most recent studies, S. czernyi was placed in Latistyla Strukan, 1970 at genus (Xue et al, 2011) or subgenus level (Krčmar et al, 2019).…”
