A major part of the mechanisms that affects species distribution is related to environmental conditions. Within a stream channel the accumulation of substrates like litter, roots, stones, gravel and sand create habitats that act as shelter and/or food source to aquatic communities, in this way supporting, or not, the establishment of different species. Based on this fact we verified the structure of aquatic insect communities in organic and inorganic habitats within Cerrado streams. Tested for differences on genera richness (i), individual abundance (ii) and genera composition (iii), and also (iv) verified if there are any indicator genera, which are faithful and specific to organic or inorganic habitats. Sampled organic (litter) and inorganic (sand and gravel) substrates in five sections of three streams and collected individuals of the orders Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera, Odonata and Heteroptera (EPTOH). Community composition differed between habitats, with organic ones having higher richness and abundance, besides being the only habitat that presented faithful and specific genera (six). It is argued that this difference may be caused due to shelter and food supply provided by organic substrates.

1. The spatial distribution and species richness of blackflies were evaluated at 58 stream sites in Central Amazonia, Brazil. Samples were taken along a north–south axis of approximately 130 km and a east–west axis of approximately 220 km. 2. Based on stream‐site characteristics, the occurrence of larvae of the six most frequently collected species was highly predictable (79.3–91.5% accuracy in prediction of occurrence). The predictive value of stream size and the presence of impoundments agrees with results of similar work in the Holarctic Region, suggesting a general responses of blackflies to environmental parameters. 3. Although only 19.0% of interstream variation in species richness was explained by a regression model, results suggested that species richness was greater in larger, cooler, faster, covered streams with rocky beds than in smaller, warmer, slower, open streams with sandy bottoms. Overall, the species richness of blackflies (11 species in total) was lower than in the temperate zone suggesting, for some taxa at least, that aquatic communities do not follow the terrestrial pattern of greater species richness in the tropics.

RESUMOA família Simuliidae (Diptera) é composta por insetos de hábito hematofágico que apresentam distribuição global e são vetores da Oncocercose e da Mansonelose. Estes organismos tem como criadouros de suas formas imaturas ambientes de água corrente, onde suas larvas e pupas se desenvolvem. Devido à larva constituir o elo mais frágil do ciclo destes insetos, os esforços para seu controle devem ser direcionados aos criadouros destas formas, que são córregos e rios. No entanto, um melhor entendimento dos padrões de preferência de habitat destes organismos podem nortear iniciativas de controle menos agressivas ao ambiente e mais eficazes. Esta revisão busca traçar um panorama do estado da arte na literatura do conhecimento dos padrões de distribuição e preferência habitat de larvas de simulídeos neotropicais e de suas perspectivas para o controle.Palavras-chave: Preferência de habitat; Controle; Simulídeos. ABSTRACTThe Simuliidae family (Diptera) is composed by hematophagous insects which show a world wide distributional pattern and are vectors of the Onchocerciasis and the Mansonelosis. These organisms breed in their immature forms in running water environments, where their larvae and pupae develop. Due to the larvae represent the weakest link in the life cycle of these insects, the efforts to their control should be focused to the breeding sites of these forms, which are rivers and streams. However, a better understanding of their habitat preference patterns may guide more efficient and more environment-friendly control initiatives. This review seeks to draw an overview of the state of the art from the literature on the knowledge of distributional and habitat preference patterns of neotropical Black fly larvae, and its perspectives for the control of these insects.
