Um estudo comparativo das cepas Feira de Santana (Bahia) e Porto Rico do Schistosoma Mansoni na infecção experimental do camundongo

Abstract: A comparative study of mice infected either with the Porto Rican or a Brazilian (Feira de Santana) strain of Schistosoma mansoni failed to show any difference regarding recovery of five day lung worms, recovery of adult worms from the portal system, number of eggs per gram of tissue in liver and intestines, histopathology or mortality rate. In fact, the differences, although small, were greater among animals infected with the same strain, that when the total results from both strains were compared.

“…Their weighted around 18-20 g at the start of the experiment and were maintained in large metal boxes, with free access to a commercial balanced diet and water. Forty animals were submitted to infection with recently eliminated cercariae from the FS strain (Andrade & Sadigursky 1985) of S. mansoni, by the transcutaneous route. Ten non-infected mice were kept in similar conditions.…”

“…Group 1: normal, intact snails (Controls -8 to 14 mm) Group 2: snails submitted to infection with 20 miracidia, which were freshly obtained from the livers of mice infected with the Feira de Santana strain (Andrade & Sadigursky 1985) of S. mansoni. Thirty to 63 days later the snails were tested for cercarial elimination.…”
