Lymnaea columella in northern Brazil

Abstract: The occurrence of a mollusc of the family Lymnaeidae is recorded for the first time in Brazil north of parallel 15ºS, as a result of the finding of Lymnaea columella in Manus and Benjamin Constant, state of Amazonas. A description is given of its shell, renal organ, genital system and radula, pointing to the morphological characteristics of diagnostic value to separate it from two other species previously studied by the author, Lymnaea viatrix and L. rupestris, which also occur in Brazil.

“…The snail mortality rates ranged from 40 to 64% at 90 days old (Tables I, II) indicating that infections with F. hepatica should be performed at around 30 days old (2-5 mm length). The largest size registered after 183 days for L. columella, from Belo Horizonte, and reared in our laboratory was 21.5 mm in length and 11 mm in width; these measurements exceed those reported for specimens from different regions of the country (Paraense 1983(Paraense , 1986.…”

“…However, such identification is complicated by dissection processes, intra and interspecific similarity and variability of morphological characters (Hubendick 1951, Ueta 1977, Paraense 1982a, 1983, Samadi et al 2000. Indeed, Paraense (1994) named L. peregrina Clessin, 1882 as a synonym of L. columella.…”

“…Snail collection -Mollusks of the species L. columella were used in the experiments, which were identified according to Paraense (1983) and Ueta (1977). The animals were systematically collected in a cemented irrigation ditch at the Station of Pisciculture at the Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, used to fill tanks meant for the creation of fish for research purposes.…”
