“…Values of dissolved oxygen recorded in SLS were higher than that found in other Rio de Janeiro lagoons such as Maricá (Oliveira et al, 1955;Guerra et al, 2011;Silva et al, 2014), Araruama (Debenay et al, 2001) and Itaipu lagoons . The values obtained in SLS indicated a favorable environment to the establishment of aerobic organisms of several trophic levels, since they require oxygen for their functions.…”

“…The MGLS has a circular shape and is inserted into a kind of deformed rocky amphitheater with its boundaries determined by the Atlantic Ocean and the Itacoatiara and Negra hills (Perrin, 1984). It is composed by four lagoons comprising a total area of 43.2 km 2 , which are currently distributed in: Maricá (20.5 km 2 ), Barra (11.7 km 2 ), Padre (1.6 km 2 ) and Guarapina (9.4 km 2 ) (Oliveira et al, 1955).…”

“…A study of this coast by OLIVEIRA et al (1955) had already raised a number of issues, such as problems related to flooding; frequent changes in the lagoon system, with the opening of channels and the release of raw sewage into the lagoons, causing a decrease in the fish population, as well as the problem of settlements resulting from increased land speculation at that time. The current situation in the region is one of abandonment, it being easy to find evidence of various aggressions to the environment, such as the illegal removal of sand, which is destroying the topography of the sand barriers; vehicles traversing the dunes and vegetated areas, destroying the local flora and fauna; illegal discharge of domestic waste; construction of houses and roads over restinga vegetation, causing deforestation; besides the constant action of criminals poaching wild animals (SILVA et al, 2014b).…”
