Quando, em 1936, demos início à pesquisa sôbre os Copepoda, a nossa intenção era a de promover o estudo taxonômico do grupo, visando rela-C!ionar as principais espécies ocorrente no litoral paulista, com especialidade as da baía de Santos e seus arredores. N essa ocasião, já tínhamos. em mente as palavras do Prof. Baird, recordadas por Fish (1925, p. 91) : "The profitable study of useful sea fishes can not be prosecuted without a knowledge of their food, the food of their food, their respective friends and foes, the habitat of several species, and their means of passing from one r egion to another in the embryonic as well as in the adult stage. }'he temperature, currents, and specific gravity, also, should be studied in connection with the migration and habits of pelagic forms". Em conseqüência de pesquisas planctonológicas levadas a efeito em periódicas excursões realizadas nas circunvizinhanças da região simtista, deliberamos publicar (Carvalho 1939, p. 32-49) uma nota preliminar em que figuraram algumas espécies por nós identificadas na citada baía e na região de mar aberto que lhe fica próxima, sobretudo entre as pontas de Itaipú, Ponta Grossa e à volta da Ilha da Moéla. Um ano mais tarde (Carvalho 1940, p. 51-67), prosseguimos nos mesmos estudos, efetuando verificações mais detalhadas quanto à morfologia e organização geral dos Copepoda, bem como da técnica de exame, determinação e conservação do material. Dificuldades diversas provocaram total paralização nos nossos trabalhos; os espécimes capturados passaram, então, a ser estudados, desenhados ou apenas conservados em frascos especiais, para ulterior determinação. Somente cinco anos depois, em virtude de uma excursão efetuada ao litoral paranaense (Carvalho 1945, p. 83-116), pudemos apresentar um primeiro ensaio sôbre a fauna de Copepodos de Caiobá e baía de Guaratuba, investigação essa baseada, em grande parte, nos estudos já efetuados na costa do E. de São Paulo. Atendendo, porém, às exigências do serviço, fomos forçados a interromper as investigações iniciadas 6 anos antes, para nos dedicarmos totalmente à pesquisa em outro grupo. The structure of the zooplankton community in an estuary adjacent to the Admiral Á lvaro Alberto Nuclear Power Plant at Angra dos Reis, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil was studied from 2001 through 2005. At that time, the power plant had been operating for 20 years. The results were compared with a previous study in 1991-1993. The zooplankton was sampled 4 times a year, in vertical hauls using a 150 lm net, at two fixed points near the plant's intake and discharge sites. Temperature, salinity, and chlorophyll a were measured. The water of Ribeira Bay is warm, with salinities typical of Coastal Water and more saline waters. Zooplankton density at the discharge site (Mean: 245,434 ind m -3 , SD: 335,358 ind m -3 ) was higher than that at the intake site (Mean: 84,634 ind m -3 , SD: 101,409 ind m -3 ). A total of 121 mesozooplankton taxa were recorded from 2001 to 2005. Copepoda constituted the most common taxon and comprised more than 57% of the total zooplankton, followed by cladocers and gastropod larvae. A seasonal zooplankton cycle was observed only during 2004; in other years, the plankton varied only between years. Overall mesozooplankton abundance at the discharge site was similar to levels reported from the inner zone of this estuary in 1991-1993. Surface temperature was the important factor structuring the zooplankton community at the discharge site. No effect on the mesozooplankton by passage through the condensers could be discerned, and no permanent negative influence on the plankton populations could be detected.
