Later studies (Azevedo 1933) demonstrated that endemic goiter was concomitant with the trypanosomiasis and not depending on the latter, as Chagas himself eventually admitted when he said that this was "an open question deserving study and insight" (Chagas 1934, Lobo et al 1962. Even the possibility that in some patients already presenting thyroid deficiency or miopraxis there might be a more marked hypothyroidism at the beginning of the acute phase, which disappeared with remission of this phase, as reported by Chagas, was not confirmed.…”

“…Diversos fatores podem promover o surgimento de patologias associadas a função tireoidiana, como doenças autoimunes, ingesta excessiva ou insuficiente de iodo, ou mesmo cirurgias e terapias farmacológicas (GRIMM, 2019). Nesse contexto, de forma interessante, alguns autores no século passado, sugeriram que a infecção por Trypanosoma cruzi, poderia promover modificações físicas e funcionais na glândula tireoide (AZEVEDO, 1933;BESTETTI et al, 2016;LOMONACO et al, 1966), porém, o impacto das desordens tireodianas no controle da doença de Chagas não foi investigado.…”
