“…Previous surveys in Brazil that included several different cities with individuals with recent HIV diagnoses or recent HIV infections demonstrate that the TDR prevalence is generally lower than the prevalence in the present study [35, 11, 1842]. However, we were able to confirm the previously reported high prevalence of TDR in the city of Salvador, located in the Northwest region, and Santos in the Southeast region of Brazil [26].…”

“…In contrast, a few of the older studies performed around the year 2000 in Rio de Janeiro showed moderate TDR levels associated with mostly NRTI in blood donors [ 70 ], individuals in the army [ 71 ] and IV drug users [ 72 ]. More recent surveys performed after 2005 have shown moderate and even threshold high levels of TDR to any ARV class: 10.7% in pregnant women in Rio de Janeiro [ 73 ], 14.1% in MSM in Belo Horizonte/Rio de Janeiro [ 74 ] and 15.7% in people seeking HIV diagnosis in voluntary counseling and testing sites in Rio de Janeiro [ 75 ]. TDR to NRTI was generally higher, and in the most recent studies, increasing NNRTI and PI TDR levels can be observed compared to older studies.…”

“…However, TDR rate between men who have sex with men and heterosexual patients was not statistically significant. Other studies including men who have sex with men have shown moderate to high prevalence of resistance mutations [Cardoso et al, ; Bermudez‐Aza et al, ; Karlsson et al, ; Tupinambas et al, ]. Despite the increased risk for HIV infection among men who have sex with men, extensive testing of incidence and TDR level should be applied to all populations with risk behaviors and not only men who have sex with men.…”
