Global literature of fiddler crabs, genus Uca (Decapoda, Ocypodidae): trends and future directions

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Crabs of the genus Uca Leach, 1814 are characterized by having strong sexual dimorphism and a global distribution. Currently, 97 species have been described and analyzed under several aspects, including population ecology, physiology and ethology. However, there is no general summary of the information from the various literatures. The aim of this study is to perform a scientometric analysis of fiddler crab studies. For this we searched papers available in the Thomson ISI database that contained the … Show more

“…The predominance of authors from this country has been reported in several studies (FAZEY et al, 2005;CARNEIRO et al, 2008;NABOUT et al, 2010). Part of the reason for this must be the greater investment in infrastructure and research (MUGNAINI et al, 2004;JAPPE, 2007).…”

“…Scientometric techniques can be used to quantify scientific production and the types of studies in a certain area (MACIAS-CHAPULA, 1998;VANTI, 2002). Scientometric have been used to diagnose trends in scientific literature on, for instance, ecology (PINTO et al, 2003;BINI et al, 2005;FAZEY et al, 2005;MELO et al, 2006), global climate change (STANHILL, 2001;NABOUT et al, 2012), groups of organisms (CARNEIRO et al, 2008;PADIAL et al, 2008;NABOUT et al, 2010), genetics (QUIXABEIRA et al, 2010) bioproducts (e.g. Biodiesel;FERREIRA et al, 2014).…”

“…Recently, the number of avian breeding papers published annually has increased, as is the case in other research areas (see examples in Nabout et al 2010). The increase in publications containing fluvicoline breeding data mirrors the general expansion of Neotropical ornithology (James 1987;Vuilleumier 2003;Freile 2005) and increasing investments in natural history museums, universities, and human resources in countries such as Brazil (Alves et al 2008;Borges 2008) and Colombia (Naranjo 2008).…”

“…The number of published articles is usually closely tied to a country's per capita income (e.g., Nabout et al 2010), and a country's research development is closely linked to its investment in infrastructure and education. Such resource allocation leads to the formation and expansion of universities and natural history museums (Freile 2005;Alves et al 2008;Nabout et al 2010).…”
