Descrição do girino de Physalaemus cicada (Anura, Leiuperidae)

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Description of the tadpole of Physalaemus cicada (Anura, Leiuperidae). The tadpole of Physalaemus cicada Bokermann, 1966 is described with base in specimens obtained through a spawning collected in a temporary pond in Fazenda Olho D'água, municipality of São João do Cariri, state of Paraiba, Brazil. In the stage 37, the tadpole attains a total length of 17,5 mm, body corresponding to 42% of the total length, oval in dorsal view, slightly depressed in lateral view and tooth row formula 2(2)/3(1). “…cicada exhibits two larval oral configurations that develop following two different trajectories. A configuration with a ventral gap was previously described [65], and in half of our samples we observe comparable transient morphologies (e.g., Fig 10B); thus in these embryos we interpret an ontogenetic trajectory similar to that of the Ph . henselii group.…”

“…The lower lip may have a mental gap and/or ventrolateral gaps, or the papillary may be continuous. Tadpoles of P. aguirrei, P. albifrons, P. centralis, P. cicada, P. cuvieri, P. henselii, and P. marmoratus have gaps in the lower lip (Pimenta & Cruz, 2004;Oliveira et al, 2010;Rossa-Feres & Jim, 1993;Vieira & Arzabe, 2008;Heyer, 1990;Kolenc et al, 2006;Nomura et al, 2003).…”

“…These larvae are typical pond-living tadpoles that are assumed to occur in the bottom of these lentic water bodies (Rossa-Feres et al, 2004;Vera Candioti, 2007) and are very similar to one another regarding to their external morphology (Vieira & Arzabe, 2008).…”

“…Environmental shifts potentially affect species, especially in life cycle stages most susceptible to ambient changing conditions. In this sense, the use of larval characters is very common among herpetologists -both for the diagnosis of species and for determination of intra-and intergeneric systematic relationships (Carneiro et al, 2004;Nascimento and Skuk, 2006;Casal and Juncá, 2008;Vieira and Arzabe, 2008).…”
